MARTYN WAGHORN is pleased to see Rangers sharing the striking responsibilities around this season as the Light Blues have hit the goal trail in the opening weeks of the campaign.

Midfielder Nicky Law became the eleventh different scorer for Mark Warburton’s side on Saturday as he rounded off the 3-0 win over Livingston that keeps the Light Blues five points clear in the Championship title race.

Waghorn currently leads the Ibrox scoring charts after netting nine goals in his first ten games for the club following his summer switch from Wigan.

He is closely followed by full-backs James Tavernier and Lee Wallace, while the likes of Barrie McKay, Kenny Miller and Andy Halliday have also played their part as Rangers have scored 38 goals so far this term.

Waghorn said: “It is important that all the boys chip in. The way we play, we are very expansive and very attack minded so we are always going to score goals.

“It is nice when everyone can chip in. But, as a striker, I am there to do my job and put the ball in the back of the net.

“It is important that, first and foremost, we play well and do the basics right and get the three points.

“Whoever scores the goals, it doesn’t matter and if I score it is a bonus.

“It is important to play well. We have set very high standards of ourselves and on Saturday we fell below that. We will bounce back and work hard.

“You have to train how you want to play. That is what we do week in week out but Saturday we fell below our standards.

“We have another opportunity on Saturday against Dumbarton and the boys know what we need to do. It will be a big test. We want to keep it going for as long as possible.

“We will keep getting the basics right and work hard. That is the foundation of everything. We will see how long it goes on.”

While much of the focus has been on Rangers’ free-flowing forward line in recent weeks, there have also been encouraging signs at the other end of the park for boss Warburton.

The Light Blues have conceded just five goals this term and followed up their clean sheet against Raith Rovers by shutting out Livi at the weekend.

The back four of Tavernier, Danny Wilson, Rob Kiernan and Wallace have impressed this term and Waghorn is pleased to see them get their rewards as well.

He said: “With the way we play, we are going to leave ourselves open to counter attacks at times.

“Defensively, it is important we stay switched on and concentrated Danny and Rob have been fantastic at centre-back.

“It is great to have them there to rely on and we are lucky to have them.

“They are experienced but still young and they have a lot of time left in the game. To have them there to call upon is fantastic.”

There have been few failures in the opening weeks of the season as Rangers have made an impressive start to the new campaign and won ten on the spin.

Right-back Tavernier has arguably been the Gers’ top performer, though, and he was yesterday named the Championship Player of the Month for August.

And Waghorn is delighted to see his former Wigan team-mate thriving at Ibrox as he has quickly become a firm favourite with the Light Blue legions.

He said: “He is doing very well. It is a big change and a big challenge and everyone is up for it. To play in front of a crowd like that at Ibrox is fantastic.

“To get the cheers and the applause he is, is great for James. But it is about the squad.

“It is a great club, everyone is chipping in well. It is a good set of lads and we need to keep it going now.”
