Judgment day beckons for a number of Junior clubs taking part in make-or-break Scottish Junior Cup replays this Saturday.

Seven West Region sides - including former trophy winners Benburb and Vale of Leven - will be going all out to avoid the ignominy of first-round exits.

And likely to be attracting the greatest focus is the New Tinto Park showdown between Benburb and Port Glasgow whose 1-1 first game stalemate was marred by an unsavoury incident which resulted in Port midfielder Barry Stanton being red carded.

The player allegedly reacted to a visiting spectator throwing a hot drink over him around the hour mark with the Port leading 1-0 through a Ross Kearns first half penalty kick conversion.

He was followed inside by team-mate Graeme McLement following two yellow card offences, leaving the home side to stage a heroic backs-to-the-wall defensive display over the closing 20 minutes which they survived but not the nine minutes of added on time deemed by whistler Alan Grainger to have elapsed during the earlier flashpoint.

Hard-working Chookey Hens striker Ryan Livingston conjured up a dramatic 95th-minute leveller that has set the Central Second Division rivals at loggerheads for the third time in a season that is just seven weeks old.

Port gaffer Craig Brown praised his players efforts in saying: “Graeme’s dismissal was a bit on the harsh side.

"If he had stayed on the park then I do believe we could have held on to our lead as we could do little else other than set up with two banks of four and invite the Bens to come at us.

“And to be fair they used their extra men to throw everything at us in those closing stages and it took numerous last gasp blocks as well as string of great saves from our goalkeeper James Dunn to keep our goal intact.

“To come so close to a remarkable victory only to have it snatched away right at the death was absolutely heartbreaking and the 1-1 outcome felt like a defeat in our dressing room afterwards.”

Long serving boss Bruno had a special pat on the back for his young striking discovery Danny Bamford who was only recruited from the now defunct Port Glasgow Under 21 ranks during the summer months.

He said: “Danny was making his Juniors debut in arguably the most difficult of circumstances but he handled the occasion like a veteran to give a good account of himself against much more experienced opponents and I’m sure the Bens backline will not be relishing facing him yet again.

“On another day he could easily have posted a hat trick to his name after striking the bar and post with shots as well as coming close with another couple of efforts.

"So you can take it as read that he’ll be one of the first names down on the team-sheet through in Govan.”

Word on the visiting team front has left-back Alan Jamieson rated extremely doubtful after aggravating a previous foot injury and last night he was heading for Hospital to get a precautionary x-ray.

Brown revealed: "We’re keeping fingers crossed Alan hasn’t broken his foot but he’s in a lot of pain and discomfort so chances are he’ll be posted missing on Saturday.

“Barry has decided to appeal his red carding and Graeme’s two yellows do not incur a ban so we’ll hopefully be close to full strength going into the replay.

“That’s twice we’ve drawn with the Bens and failed to finish with a full complement of players on each occasion so we’ve been stressing to the guys that keeping 11 of them on the pitch might tip the balance in our favour.”

Benburb midfielder Conor Monaghan is rated a non-starter with an ankle ligament problem that forced him to come off during the first half of last week’s game.

The only other likely change in the home team’s line-up could see a starting place found for lively wide midfielder Scott Hendry.

It’s every bit as difficult to predict how matters will pan out in the other all-West Region head to head taking place at the Beltane between Lanarkshire near neighbours Wishaw and Bellshill Athletic.

The visitors had the better scoring opportunities in the first meeting however they may live to regret their wastefulness in front of goal as Chris McGroarty’s men boast a 100 per cent record in their own backyard this season.

The former Senior ace may be left with little option other than to pull the boots on himself because of the unavailability of Kindlan brothers, Dean and Dan, as well as Craig Crawford.

“Rockburn Park’s tight confines did not suit our playing style and Bellshill were able to press us high up the pitch, so I take heart from my guys saying they will make a better fist of it at home.”

Visiting boss David Lilley felt his players passed up a great opportunity to secure a second round place, but is confident they can do it at the second time of asking.

He said: "I’m not in the slightest bit despondent about the bigger playing surface as we have players capable of thriving in the extra space and playing a more expansive game.”

Meanwhile, the remaining West Region representatives face difficult tests on the road, none more so than Maybole whose goalkeeper Grant Weir needed to produce a terrific penalty kick stop to keep Broxburn Athletic at bay last weekend.

Vale of Leven may regret not making home advantage tell now they are contemplating a journey into Fife to take on Kennoway Star Hearts while Ardeer Thistle will hope to come out of the blocks quicker against a West Calder United side who were 3-0 to the good down in Ayrshire before Derek Gemmell’s side came roaring back to earn a 3-3 draw.
