COLIN JACKSON made over 500 appearances for Rangers and spent over 20 years at Ibrox, winning three League Championships, three Scottish Cups and five League Cups. Unfortunately, he failed a fitness test prior to the 1972 European Cup-Winners’ Cup victory over Moscow Dynamo after playing a significant role in helping his club reach the final in Barcelona.

BLUE SKY (Falkirk) – One of my favourite players passed away several months ago, the ex-Rangers centre-half Colin Jackson. I see that he played eight times for Scotland and scored one goal. Who did he score against?

Colin’s international goal came in the Home International Championship against Wales in 1975.

The game was played at Ninian Park in Cardiff. Wales led 2-0 at half-time, with goals from John Toshack and Brian Flynn.

Colin reduced the deficit with a goal on 54 minutes. Bruce Rioch then scored to make the final score 2-2.

BOBBY KENNEDY (Bishopbriggs) – It is well known that Jock Stein signed St Mirren Goalkeeper Dennis Connaghan for Celtic after Evan Williams had a poor game in the 1971 League Cup Final, when Celtic lost 4-1 to Partick Thistle. But didn’t Dennis play against Celtic in the semi-final?

This is so. On October 6, 1971, Celtic beat Saints 3-0 in the semi-final at Hampden. Match reports say Dennis performed well. He was, however, beaten by Davie Hay, Harry Hood and Bobby Lennox.

ANDY NEILSTON (Glasgow) – My Uncle, a native of Fife used to regale me with memories of his favourite player, Charlie Fleming, an inside-forward with East Fife.

Charlie’s nickname was “Legs”. Can you tell me about him?

Charlie Fleming who also had the nickname “Cannonball” due to his renowned vicious shot, played for East Fife for eight seasons from 1947/48 to 1954/55 season when he was transferred to Sunderland.

He won two Scottish League Cup Final medal’s when East Fife defeated Dunfermline Athletic 3-0 in the 1949 final at Hampden in front of a crowd of 39,744 and then in the 1953 final when East Fife defeated Partick Thistle 3-2, attendance 38,529.

He scored a goal in each of these games. He lined up for East Fife in the 1950 Scottish Cup Final when the Fifers were defeated 3-0 by Rangers in front of a crowd of 118,262 at Hampden Park.

He represented the Rest of Britain team who played against Wales, in the Welsh FA’s 75th Anniversary Jubilee game at Ninian Park on December 5, 1951.

He was the only non-internationalist selected. He scored for the Rest of Britain who were defeated 3-2.

He gained his only international cap for Scotland against Northern Ireland in Belfast on October 3, 1953, when he scored two of Scotland’s goals in a 3-1 victory. He died in 1997, aged 70.
