CELTIC’S man of the match Leigh Griffiths admitted he was under pressure to score yesterday – after his Scotland strike rivals netted the day before.

The Hoops forward enjoyed a rare Saturday afternoon off ahead of yesterday’s trip to Hamilton, only to have his day made that bit worse by the news Steven Fletcher, Chris Martin and Jordan Rhodes all hit the mark for their respective clubs.

Given the group will assemble today ahead of the national team’s final two games of their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign, Griffiths was aware that the men he is competing against for a starting place against Poland and Gibraltar have all timed their run into the box to perfection.

However, the 25-year-old more than joined in on the act yesterday with a fine assist as well as a goal of his own to send him off on Scotland duty in high spirits.

He said: “I had to score because the other three strikers for Scotland scored yesterday. I had to do my bit. They scored right after each other.

“I went back to the house for a bit of time off yesterday and was watching Soccer Saturday and saw them pop up.

“Jordan Rhodes got a double, Fletch got one then Chris Martin scored and I’m sitting going, ‘ooof, I need to do something special tomorrow.’

“But I’m just happy to get the goal, get the win and go into the international break on a high.”

So far Fletcher has been the man trusted the most by national boss Strachan to lead the line for Scotland.

Griffiths now hopes his showing yesterday will give the national boss a selection headache.

“I can only concentrate on what I’m doing for Celtic,” said the man who has only started to games for his country.

“If I keep doing well and scoring goals the manager is going to have a tough job to decide who is going to play.

“But if I’m not in the starting XI I will sit on the bench and wait for my turn. I’ve said before there are a lot of players vying for that one jersey.

“We will see who he picks on Thursday.”
