JAMES Tavernier today revealed he has set his sights on breaking Rangers legend John Greig’s record goal haul after taking his tally for the season to nine.

English right back Tavernier curled in one of his trademark free-kick screamers in the 3-1 victory over Championship rivals Falkirk on Saturday.

The summer signing has told how he has enjoyed meeting up with Greig, the man voted the Greatest Ever Ranger, for chats before matches at Ibrox.

The 1972 European Cup Winners’ Cup-winning captain has been winding Tav up about his own prolific scoring exploits during his heyday.

The left back once netted no fewer than 13 goals in the 1967/68 campaign – and Tavernier is determined to beat that mark in the months ahead.

He said: “I’m having a little bit of banter with John Greig. He says he scored 13 goals once so I’m kind of after that record and keen to beat him because we have a a good laugh together.

“It’s a bonus if I score a goal. Obviously, I’m delighted when I do so, but it’s all about helping the team.

“Waldo (Rangers captain Lee Wallace) is exactly the same. It’s great the two full-backs are contributing with goals.

“Everyone is working hard for each other throughout the whole pitch. We just all want to help in any way I can.”

Rangers looked set to drop their first points of the season against Falkirk in their tenth Championship match of the new term at the weekend after Will Vaulks cancelled out an early Dean Shiels opener.

Mark Warburton’s side only edged in front after Tavernier had netted from a free-kick which incensed visiting manager Peter Houston and his players in the 81st minute.

But the 24-year-old feels the gritty performance shows that Warburton’s side, who have been lavished with praise for the attractive brand of football they have played this term, can grind out results.

He said: “If you watched the Premier League last season and saw Chelsea you would see that sometimes you have to win ugly and really dig deep to win games. That brings out the champions.

“I’m just happy that we can find ways to win games. We don’t always have to play really good football to get there. Hopefully, that can help us through the season, because it won’t always be pretty. We are going to have to dig deep.

“There were a few challenges but we’ve had that in previous games. We are Rangers Football Club and everyone wants to beat us. People are willing to put their foot round but we give it back and are always up for a challenge. We’ll always be at it.”

Tavernier added: “It has been terrific so far. The first three months have been great. The project of the team building and gelling has been fantastic.

“I think the gaffer and Davie (Weir) have put a great team together. We’ve got maximum points from nine games. This is only the start of it. We have a lot of work still to do. Now we have the momentum, we can’t let anything slip and we just have to keep going.”
