DID you hear the one about the Scotsman, Englishman, Irishman (both from north and south) and a Welshman?

Only one of them will get to stay at home next summer as the rest will sun themselves drinking the finest of wines in France. It's not funny, is it.

But this is the rather disturbing scenario that could well happen should Scotland fail to beat Poland tomorrow night.

It is a strange time when Scotland are worse than Northern Ireland but much better than Holland.

Andy Robertson, one of our better young players and one which gives the country real hope, believes Scotland should not be compared to our neighbours as they have been given a much simpler path to qualification.

And he is determined to win tomorrow and clinch a play-off place.

The Hull City star said: “We are determined to take this country back to a major championship. I think if you look at the other home nations' groups then our group is probably a lot harder than any of theirs.

“England and Northern Ireland, I think, have got it quite easy. Obviously they still need to do the job and qualify, but I think we’ve been dealt the toughest group - and we thrive on that.

“We have had big games and we’ve enjoyed all of them. There’s two massive games still to play and if we get six points then we might just make it.”

If Robertson, who should start at left-back, is nervous ahead of the biggest test of his career so far then he’s doing well to hide it.

He said: “I think it is more the excitement of it that I feel. Obviously everyone knows how big a game it is and what result we need to get, so I think it’s more the squad is just excited to be back together to try to get the three points we need.

“The Georgia game was disappointing, but we can’t dwell on it. I always thought we would need to beat Poland regardless and on the head-to-head, if we do win, it will put us in a better place.

“Hampden was full for the Germany game, as was Parkhead for Ireland. We have risen to those occasions, the fans have been brilliant and got right behind us so I think a lot of the players thrive on that, you won’t find them hiding.”

The big danger tomorrow is Robert Lewandowski who is scoring goals for fun right now.

Robertson is not someone who believes Poland are anywhere close to being a one-man team.

He said: “Trying to keep him (Lewandowski) quiet isn’t going to win us the game. Yes, it will help stopping him scoring because a lot of things come off him, but we have to try to create chances ourselves, get balls in the box and get goals ourselves.

“We will take care of him and everyone else. He is in fine form just now if we can keep him quiet will be a big push towards the right results."

Robertson is a rare talent and it is a surprise that he remained at Hull City after they were relegated last season.

Several Premier League side at least made an enquiry, his club manager Steve Bruce admitted as much, and yet the left-back is playing Championship football, despite knowing that he was something of a wanted man.

Robertson said: “I think it was just more people talking. I kind of blotted it out. It was the same when I was at Dundee United even when Hull were making the bids they did.

"It’s when one is accepted you have the decision to make.

“When there are bids and enquiries there is nothing you can do about it. You do not hear anything about it and I just try to keep myself away. I was happy to get my pre-season under my belt and get the season started.”

And his season could be about to get a while lot better. We all hope.
