SCOTLAND take on Poland tonight in their crunch Euro 2016 qualifier and will be looking to prevent in-form Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski getting any goal-scoring opportunities…

GEORGE (Giffnock) In recent times Germany have had Polish-born strikers playing for them. Miroslav Klose and Lucas Podolski spring to mind. Was the current Poland striker Robert Lewandowski born in Germany?

No. Robert Lewandowski was born in the Polish capital, Warsaw. He is a prolific goalscorer at both club and International level.

He scored 74 league goals in 131 appearances for Borussia Dortmund and scored 29 league goals in 38 appearances for Bayern Munich.

At International level the 27-year-old has scored 29 goals and won 70 caps for his country.

JIMMY (Fernhill) Can you confirm the pessimistic fact my friend keeps repeating that Scotland have never beaten Poland at home, I hope he is wrong?

I’m afraid your friend is right. Scotland’s only victories against Poland were recorded away in friendlies, a 2-0 win in 1958 and another 2-0 win in 2014.

Prior to the current Euro 2016 games, the only competitive matches were in the World Cup 1966 qualifiers.

In the away match, Scotland recorded a 1-1 draw, but in the return match at Hampden they lost 2-1 in dramatic fashion with Poland’s two goals coming in the last six minutes.

Hopefully history does not repeat itself tonight.

J. COATS (Glasgow) Could you supply a potted history of Motherwell full-back Joe Wark who passed away recently?

Joe joined Motherwell in the summer of 1967 from Irvine Vics and made his debut on August 2, 1968, in a friendly match against Tranmere Rovers. His League debut was on 21st August 21, 1968, against Albion Rovers.

His last game was against Rangers on December 10, 1983. He won a Scottish League cap against the Football League in 1976 and won a Scottish League Division 2 winner’s medal in 1969 and a Division 1 winner’s medal in 1982.

He uniquely received two testimonials – one against West Brom and the other against an Old Firm select. He also had the Motherwell sponsors lounge named after him and was named the supporters player of the year three times.

A one-club man, he played in a total of 580 games and scored 17 goals in all competitions during his career at Motherwell.
