SO it is Klopp for the Kop. Has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?

On Thursday night it was officially announced that Jurgen Klopp would be the man to succeed Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool. In the end, it wasn’t a massive surprise.

I think it was heading that way for some time and momentum has been in his favour. After all, he is a very high profile manager with distinct ideas. But more importantly he was available.

I’ve watched Klopp’s work close up covering the Bundesliga at Dortmund and Mainz and it was the logical, obvious choice.

His teams play in a particular manner and in Germany it is known as ‘Gegenpressing’. It’s a style that essentially is less possession-orientated than any of the other top clubs adopt. It asks a lot of all the players, it needs stamina and constant work.

It’s all about work without the ball as well as with it. A lot of fight, passion and energy will be needed.

It will be a change in style for English fans.

No team has really taken on the pressing mantle. Bayern Munich play that way, even though it’s a slightly more cultured form of it. They press very high, so do Leverkusen.

Down south we have not seen it as much. It will take a little bit of time to get that message across. Klopp has said himself he will take a look to see what needs done and of course he will want to bring in his own players.

Klopp is a really student of the game, but he said he prefers heavy metal to orchestral music.

It’s in keeping with his personality. He introduced this style at Dortmund in the middle of their financial challenges, and in the end you don’t win back-to-back titles without having something about you.

If you think of Dortmund and their crowd factor, they are a team of the people.

You’d not say they were a plastic or artificial club. Looking at Liverpool, you see much the same thing. It’s a team for ordinary people, it’s not been invented for commercial reasons.

Regarding Brendan, I wasn’t surprised he left Anfield, although I do have sympathy for him. It is a job that is unfinished, it’s early and results were not wretched despite being disappointing.

He will bounce back, I have no doubt in that. I can’t see him playing golf for the rest of his managerial career.

Back to Klopp, It is hard to say if he is the man that can at last bring a title back to Merseyside. Factors such as budget and resources will ultimately determine that.

But from time to time Liverpool do find a manager who on the strength of his work can upset the odds. Klopp did it in Germany when Dortmund had no right to compete with Bayern on a financial basis. That will give fans hope.

He has more competition here among the leading clubs than he did in Germany, but I think it will be an enjoyable period for Liverpool fans. He is a natural enthusiast, he will get people behind him.

Klopp looks as if he enjoys being there and that is the type of manager that Liverpool need.
