MARCO NEGRI has become the third former Rangers player to join the Sons of Struth Football Academy as an ambassador.

SportTimes revealed last month that Gers strike heroes Michael Mols and John MacDonald had given their backing to the group as they look to establish a youth football programme.

The SoS rose to prominence during Rangers’ off-field troubles and were at the forefront of the fight for change in the Ibrox boardroom.

The group now have big plans for the Academy as they look to give kids across Glasgow and beyond a chance to benefit from coaching and have an opportunity to play our national sport.

Negri said: “I've been in touch with Craig Houston, a great guy and a loyal Rangers supporter that fought hard for the good of the club, my club.

“He told me about his project to build something serious and professional to help young players and immediately I gave my support to him and to the Academy.

“When I am back in Glasgow, I will be honoured to coach for a session.

“Kids are our future football wise, but also for our society. We have an obligation to invest in them and try to prepare them for the perfect path.

“The Academy is offering something special for young players, a place where they can develop football ability, but also grow up with the right education and respect.

“I want to thank the volunteer coaches because they have a very important role in the development of the kids in the Academy.

“To work on the technique and to have confidence with the ball at your feet is the most important goal, but having fun helps kids a lot.

“They can’t be too worried about the result of a game or of a tournament, the focus is on the development of the player, and of course of a solid team.”
