SHOCK results tend to go hand in hand with the early stages of the Scottish Junior Cup and Saturday’s array of secpnd-round ties certainly didn’t come up short in that respect.

Once-mighty cup kings Cambuslang Rangers went crashing out on the wrong end of a 7-1 rout against Girvan.

And an even bigger 'skelping' was dished out to last weekend’s beaten Euroscot Cup Eng finalists Vale of Clyde in going down 10-2 away to a rampant Beith, for whom Andy Reid bagged four of his side’s goals.

Ayrshire big guns Glenafton lost 3-1 at home to Jeanfield Swifts while Largs Thistle were disappointingly dumped 2-1 by lowly Livingston Utd.

However, undoubtedly putting all these cup upsets firmly in the shade was Wishaw’s 3-0 elimination of a Rob Roy side currently sitting top of the Super Premier Division summit

It had bordered on the unthinkable that Chris McGroarty’s men could travel through to the Guys Meadow Stadium and get the better of the in-form Rabs.

But the lower league outfit ran out deserved winners thanks to a brace of goals from Dan Kindlan either side of a Craig Crawford counter.

Far more easy to predict was the Greenfield Park clash of Shettleston and Kilbirnie Ladeside which had hitherto been widely tipped to be a close-fought contest.

And that’s exactly what the top-flight rivals played out in a high tempo 1-1 stalemate that did not lack for a touch of controversy.

The most telling moment arrived with 18 minutes on the clock as burly Shettleston flank ace bob Campbell cut inside from the left and let loose a shot that struck the legs of referee Craig King inside the penalty area and rebounded some 20 yards upfield to spark a Kilbirnie attack.

Ayrshire midfielder Darren Miller seized upon the fortuitous rebound and sent a forward pass to Kieron Brannan.

He is turn fed the ball into the path of striker Stevie Meechan who despatched a well struck shot that Town goalkeeper Bryn Halliwell could only deflect high into the net.

Kilbirnie’s animated celebrations were matched by the furious Town players besieging whistler King, who remained unmoved by their protests.

Experienced shotstopper Halliwell had better luck in saving a fiercely-hit Brannan volley just before the teams went inside at the interval with a still complaining Shettleston trailing 1-0, much to the chagrin of team manager Hugh Kelly.

He said afterwards: “The referee has had a good game overall but I’d like to think he would admit his positioning when Bob Campbell has shot at goal could and should have been better given he was almost on the penalty spot.

“A dropped ball would have been fairer all round because Kilbirnie have gone straight upfield and profited from his intervention which my players have found hard to stomach after playing so well against arguably the best team we have met this season.

“Thankfully, we didn’t let the heads go down and continued to plug away second half to be rewarded with a late equaliser and the guys finished the game on top and looking the more likely team to score.

"So if anything the final whistle came too early for us.”

Kelly’s choice half-time words to his playing charges saw the home side dominate territorially after the break, but without seriously troubling Blasties goalkeeper Kieron Hughes thanks in no small way to the superb no-nonsense defending of Michael O’Byrne and Mark Staunton in front of him.

The clock ticking down raised hopes among visiting supporters of their team holding out for a notable triumph.

But they were cruelly undone in 85 minutes as a goalmouth stramash saw the ball break kindly for Town defender Ryan Frances to lash home a slightly deflected shot beyond Hughes for 1-1.

Kilbirnie gaffer Stevie Swift said: “We always knew it was going to be tough coming here and I’d have bitten your hand off beforehand to be offered a draw and the chance to play again in front of our own supporters.

“That said, I do believe we have passed up a great opportunity to book ourselves a place in the next round as we were looking good for our 1-0 lead going into the closing stages.”

Speaking about the incident leading to his side’s goal prompted a withering Swift retort.

“Would the Shettleston people have complained in the same manner if the ball had deflected off the Referee and into our net? Somehow I think not ?”

Also having to get through at the second time of asking are six other West Region sides Benburb, Saltcoats Vics , Greenock, Larkhall Thistle, Petershill for whom Chris Craig’s second half equaliser earned a 1-1 draw at home to Newtongrange Star and not forgetting strongly fancied Hurlford United who led 2-0 away to Fauldhouse Utd through James Creaney and Ross Robertson goals only to be pegged back by their East Region hosts for a 2-2 draw.

Tam Hanlon (pen), Robbie Winters and Chris Walker were on target in Pollok’s 3-1 defeat of Yoker Athletic and Willie Duncan netted a hat-trick as St Anthony's routed Forres Thistle 6-0.

But home advantage did not prevent Glasgow Perthshire succumbing to a 4-0 defeat against Lanark United for whom Keiran McGurk, Alan McCrum, Ryan Hutchison and Kris Jarvis were on target.

On the road, Robert McGuire (2) and Marc McDonnell saw St Roch's overcome Ellon United 3-0 and Clydebank won 2-0 at Forfar West End through Jordan Shelvey and Joel Kasabundi (pen) counters, but there were only long faces on the Maryhill bus coming back from a 4-3 defeat at the hands of Lochee United.
