Morton’s Alex Samuel says that his derby goal against St Mirren topped strikes at youth level against his parent club Swansea’s great rivals Cardiff.

Samuel grabbed a deserved equaliser in the 90th minute during Friday night’s Renfrewshire derby in Paisley.

Now he wants to use the goal as a springboard to a starting spot for the Greenock side.

“It was a fantastic moment,” he said.

“It was great to get my first league goal and I know it meant a lot to the fans.

“I know what the games are like between Swansea and Cardiff, so to score against your rivals always makes it that bit more special.

“I scored against Cardiff at under-18s and under-21s, but that goal topped it with all the fans going mad when I put it away.

“I heard a few mentions that it might have been offside, but when you’re in that zone you don’t really notice it, I just saw the ball coming to me and I put it in the net.

“I’m not sure if I was offside but the referee gave it and that’s all that matters. All I knew was that I had scored and I was off to celebrate.

“When chances come like that it’s a bit instinctive. The ball came to me and I just thought about not getting too much on it or leaning back so that I didn’t sky it.

“You’ve got to bury chances like that when they present themselves and I was delighted I was able to do that.

“We played well, especially in the second-half, and we were knocking on the door for a good while so it was no more than we deserved.

“We could even have won it in the end, but we’ll take a point away from home.

“What we’re aiming for is just to put a shift in every week and concentrate on each game on a week-to-week basis.

“We want to get as many points on the board as possible and we’ll see where we end up.

“I’ve been on the bench the last few weeks but I respect Jim Duffy’s decision. He’s the manager and he makes the choices he feels are right each week.

“It would be great to start, that’s what I love to do and I’d love to get more goals.

“As a sub when you come on it’s hard to get up to the pace of the game, all you can do is try to make an impact and I was really glad to do that again.”
