Leigh Griffiths has insisted that Celtic can still prevail against Ajax this evening, despite the loss of captain Scott Brown.

The Hoops skipper will join the injured Kris Commons in the stand,, while fellow midfielders Nir Bitton and Sttefan Johansen are also out due to suspension.

Charlie Mulgrew is expected to make his first appearance in three months in an attempt to shore the gaps left by the loss of the quartet, but Griffiths remains upbeat that Celtic can find a way past Frank de Boer's side tonight.

The Hoops need a victory to maintain their chances of getting out of Group A and Griffiths insists he has every faith in the players who will come into the side tonight.

“The lads who are out will be disappointed but it’s an opportunity for others to come in," said the striker.

“We’re going to be missing big name players so it will be hard for us. But we have boys who are capable of coming in and doing a job. If they weren’t they wouldn’t be here.

“We saw last year Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay-Steven got dropped in at the deep end against Inter Milan and we saw how well they played that night.

“Tomorrow will be no different.

“The boys coming in know what is at stake. We need to put on a performance for the manager and for the fans.

“It would be a massive result for us given the players we are missing. We could be without three of our midfield four."

And Griffiths has revealed that while Brown's influence can't extend to the pitch this evening, that he will still look to perform a captain's role in the dressing room.

"Just because Scott is out injured doesn’t mean he isn’t around the training ground and buzzing. He is still cracking jokes. Ultimately, though, it is a big loss for us," said Griffiths.

"We were dealt a blow when Scott was out before the game at Hearts but Stefan and Nir came in and did a job.

"Whoever the manager plays in that position, we have good players all around.

"Scott is the captain and leader but we have players who can come in and do a good job."

Griffiths believes that if Celtic were to stage an audacious comeback in the group and take maximum points from Ajax and Fenerbahce that it would be a bigger achievement than last season.

Whether or not two victories within the group are within Celtic's capabilities remains to be seen, but Griffiths would like to be part of a result that eases the pressure on the Celtic manager.

"It’s a results driven business," he said. "We are doing okay domestically but everyone seems to focus on Europe and how he does there.

‘We got through our group last year. Ultimately we got knocked out by Inter Milan but we gave a good account of ourselves.

‘We have been given a harder group this season so if we can get through then I think it will be a bigger achievement than last time.

“No one will really give us a chance this time apart from the manager and the boys in the dressing room.

“The fans will give us a great backing and hopefully we can get three points."
