AJAX manager Frank de Boer has pinpointed Leigh Griffiths as Celtic’s danger man ahead of the teams’ crunch Europa League tie at Parkhead tonight. Both teams are without a victory in the group stage so far and will likely need to win if they are to pip Fenerbahce to the second qualifying place between group leaders Molde who have already progressed to the last 32.

De Boer, who spent six months as a Rangers player a decade ago alongside twin brother Ronald, admitted he was bolstered by news that Celtic will be without key figures including captain Scott Brown but revealed there were other Celtic players that he still feared.

He said: “It’s a big blow for them, especially with Brown being out for eight weeks or so. That’s very disappointing for them but they have a strong squad and I’m sure they will have replacements.

“Griffiths is a good striker. His heart is in the right place. He always wants to score goals and works very hard for the team. He has been impressive.

“James Forrest and Stuart Armstrong are also great players. Even with the injuries and suspensions Celtic have, they still have good players in the squad. The back four they have is also good.”

Ajax, like Celtic, have done well in their domestic league this season but struggled in Europe. And De Boer feels it would be better for Celtic and the rest of Scottish football should Rangers return to the Ladbrokes Premiership next season.

He added: “It’s a pity Celtic haven’t been able to play against Rangers in the last four seasons because that brings something extra to the league. Otherwise it is 99 per cent certain that Celtic will win the league again. I think it will be good for the competition when Rangers are back and able to fight for the title again.”
