MOTHERWELL’S Marvin Johnson is not alarmed at the fact his side find themselves in a lowly and familiar position.

Instead, the Fir Park winger is confident it is not a relegation scrap Well are destined for this campaign – but a top-six spot.

Johnson was one of the stand-out performers last season in the Premiership play-off ties with Rangers that kept the Lanarkshire club in the Scottish top flight, most notably for his speculative but spectacular goal that kicked off a 3-0 second leg rout at Fir Park.

A few months on and Motherwell are back in the same second-bottom spot that earned them that showdown with Stuart McCall’s team.

Despite that, there is not the same sense of worry that could be felt around Fir Park this time last year, as Johnson explains.

“You can see that we have a good side, even if the results aren’t demonstrating that,” he told SportTimes.

“The players and the fans know we have a good squad, it’s just about finding our form at the right time and stringing a few results together. It’s all about consistency.

“If we do that, then we will have no problem getting into the top six.

“Me and the rest of the boys no getting into the top half is without a doubt where we should be looking at. We know what we have in the dressing room, it’s just about getting those performances together.

“If we do that that then there should be no problem getting into the top six.”

It has been a rollercoaster of emotions for the man signed from Kidderminster Harriers in February.

In his first foray into the professional ranks, Johnson’s pace and willingness to beat a man, not to mention his keen eye for goal that was demonstrated at the weekend against Hearts, has made him one of Motherwell’s most dangerous assets.

Looking back on events over the last year, he said: “To be honest when I first came up here I didn’t know what to expect.

“I didn’t know much about the style of football and I tried to make myself feel at home.

“I’ve got involved with the club and I’m really enjoying it. We’ve got a good passing side when we want to be, at times we have maybe been a bit route one. The results show that’s not how we should be playing with the guys we have.”

Johnson was originally brought in by Ian Baraclough but is now looking to flourish under the stewardship of Mark McGhee.

The Scotland assistant has been impressed by the 25-year-old from Birmingham, and Johnson is keen to progress under his new manager, starting this Saturday away to Partick Thistle.

“A gaffer always brings something new,” said the winger. “He is helping me out a lot and I’m trying to learn from him every single day so I can improve. That’s what he wants us to do.

“The gaffer has told us he wants his wide men to get goals and that is what we are working on doing.”

He added: “We will look back at the game against Hearts and think we should have taken all three points. I thought we showed more fight and togetherness as a team against Hearts than we did in previous weeks.

“We gave away silly goals but we need to take the positives from it and move on to next week.”
