MOTHERWELL’S Stevie Hammell insists Mark McGhee’s squad doesn’t need bolstered – despite them going down 6-0 at Hearts.

The Steelmen went in to Saturday’s game at Tynecastle without suspended Keith Lasley and the energetic figure of Liam Grimshaw, who was recalled to Manchester United.

It meant a re-jigged line-up was chosen to face the Jambos in what turned out to be the Lanarkshire club’s heaviest defeat since February 2011.

Trailing 3-0 at half-time, Motherwell would go on to ship another hat-trick of goals in the second half, as well see their hosts have a further two scores disallowed for offside.

McGhee spoke after the match about looking to add to his lot. But, even though the heavy loss, Hammell reckons there is no need for reinforcements.

“I don’t think so,” said the Motherwell full-back. “I think we’ve got enough there.

“In certain positions, we could maybe do with one or two but there is good competition, probably in every position.

“It just wasn’t ideal with Grimmy going away and Las being suspended on the day of such a big game.

“I think there’s a good squad there, good competition, plus there’s quite a few good young boys coming through as well.

“I’m not in a position to say what the gaffer is going to do, but if he doesn’t decide to bring anyone in, I think we’ve got enough.”

Due to the reshuffle, Hammell was redeployed on the opposite side at right-back while Joe Chalmers was brought in with Lionel Ainsworth, and Josh Law was shifted into central midfield.

Ultimately, it was a rejig that failed to pay off, although the Motherwell veteran was not prepared to hold that up as an excuse for the scoreline.

“I don’t think you can have any excuse,” he said. “You’ve just got to look at yourself. If you’re going to look for an excuse, you will find one. Everybody has to look at themselves and ask if they’ve done enough. Probably everyone could say they didn’t.

“What we prepared for didn’t go to plan at all. Our game plan has been working well for us in the last few weeks, but today it didn’t.

“They’re a good team. We came here under no illusions. When they get two or three goals, they’ve got players who can then go and enjoy the game and hurt you. And that’s what happened.”

This defeat was Motherwell’s first since November 21, bringing their impressive six-game run to a halt.

That sequence helped take Well out of immediate danger and leaves them in eighth place in the Ladbrokes Premiership, even though only one point separates them from second-bottom Kilmarnock.

Despite that, Hammell is still confident crisis can be averted with the resources at the club’s disposal.

“I think we have [enough to survive] but we need to go out and prove it,” he said. “After losing 6-0, it’s hard to say that, but I honestly believe we’ve got enough in there.

“I don’t know if the gaffer’s maybe going to bring one or two in as well that can help us along the way.

“I believe there is enough but we need to go and show it. We need to put together another run that would move us away because it is so tight. Everybody is beating each other just now.”
