GLASGOW Warriors forward Ryan Wilson will learn today whether he faces a ban for an alleged offence in the game against Northampton at the weekend - but even if he is cleared he is still unlikely to play in the Calcutta Cup next month.

Wilson has been accused of grabbing the testicles of Saints captain Lee Dickson during the Warriors’ 19-15 Champions Cup defeat, and if found guilty could be landed with a hefty suspension. He and team-mate Tim Swinson, who has been cited for a punch which got him sinbinned in the same match, are both expected to attend a legal hearing in London today.

Swinson has been included by Scotland coach Vern Cotter in his squad of 35 for the Six Nations Championship, which begins with that home game against England on 6 February. There is no place for Wilson - but Cotter said the decision to leave the back-row player out had been taken before he was cited on Monday evening.

As well as explaining that Wilson had been omitted because of his lack of form, Cotter was keen to suggest that there was little in the supposed offence against Dickson. “We made a decision with Ryan before he was cited,” the coach said. “We’ve been happy with the way he’s been improving, but we feel other players are playing better than he is at the moment. He’s one of those players who could come into contention as the competition goes on, as we’ll lose players. We had a talk with him last week, and he’s focusing on a couple of things to improve his game.”

Asked if he expected Wilson to be cleared, Cotter continued: “I have no idea. He’ll go through the hearing process. It seems to me he was just reaching for a pair of shorts, but there are other people who will make a decision.

“Like I said his game has improved, and he’s been focusing on carrying the ball and looking for turnovers. He has been playing better, but he didn’t do enough to force himself into the team.”

There are only two uncapped players in the Scotland squad, both props, Zander Fagerson of Glasgow and Rory Sutherland of Edinburgh. Mark Bennett is currently sidelined because of a shoulder injury, but Cotter believes the Warriors centre still has a chance of regaining fitness in time for the Calcutta Cup. Warriors hooker Fraser Brown is omitted because of his ankle injury, but should be back playing in three or four weeks.
