EMBARASSING. A word that Motherwell goalkeeper Connor Ripley used four times to describe how he felt about his worst ever day at the office.

The man between the sticks was powerless to stop rampant Hearts running away with a 6-0 rout at Tynecastle on Saturday.

Ripley has been a sensation since coming to Fir Park at the start of the summer, so much so Mark McGhee managed to secure an extension on his deal until the end of the season.

But the big shot stopper was frank about his pain reflecting back on Motherwell’s heaviest defeat in five years.

“That’s the most goals I’ve conceded in the one game. Prior to this I think I’d let in five,” he told SportTimes.

“I am embarrassed, it’s as simple as that. I’m embarrassed to let six goals in in front of 16,500 people. It’s embarrassing.

“You are paid to keep the goals out so when you let six it’s just not good enough. I know it’s not just me but when you are a goalkeeper it’s hard to take.”

Ripley added: “I think losing 6-0 is painful no matter what.

“We had changes but we had good enough players to deal with that. At the end of the day the Hearts players were that 20 percent more than us. They worked harder, won the ball.

“It’s embarrassing to lose 6-0 and I’m not the happiest man in the world.”

Without doubt Hearts were deserved winners in the capital. However, Motherwell weren’t without their chances.

“There were spells when we played well but if you are not at 100 percent when playing a team like Hearts you are going to get punished,” said Ripley. “That’s what happened.

“Smashing six goals by me is just not good enough. I’m not happy with my performance and I know the few of the lads are the same.

“If you think about it, they scored six but they also had two disallowed. It could have been 8-0 and that’s just not good enough, not for our standards as footballers.

“We are winners and that’s just not good enough.”

The chance for McGhee’s team to make amends arrives in the form of Ross County at Fir Park on Saturday.

When the two last met back in November, the Staggies ran out comfortable 3-0 winners in Dingwall in what was a convincing victory.

On the back of that result, though, Well went on a six-game unbeaten run that was only halted at the weekend.

It is a sequence that gives Ripley confidence.

“We had a good run of six games unbeaten, and we have got ourselves out of a bit of trouble,” he said.

“We can’t now let that slip and go down the league again. It’s ridiculously tight.

“We are playing at home this weekend and that’s where we want to get our points. We have Ross County who beat us 3-0 last time and we want to get back at them.

“In that game we had absences. We missed some big players again when we played Hearts, Las and Grimmy are massive players.

“It’s all well Grimmy got his move to Preston, I’m happy for him, but we have to deal with it. When we play Ross County this weekend we have to shove our chests out and say let’s give it our all.”
