MARK WARBURTON insists he trusts Rangers chairman Dave King to deliver on his Ibrox master plan and back him during the Light Blues rebuild.

The Gers boss last night completed his third deal of the January transfer window as Billy King made a loan switch from Hearts until the end of the campaign.

Deals for Maciej Gostomski and Harry Forrester were signed earlier this month, while Accrington Stanley pair Matt Crooks and Josh Windass have put pen-to-paper on pre-contracts to move north of the border in the summer.

But Warburton was unable to secure the services of midfielder Toumani Diagouraga as he joined Leeds United from Brentford, while he has seen two bids for Michael O’Halloran rejected by St Johnstone.

Chairman King has previously spoken of the possibility Rangers that will have to ‘over-invest’ as part of a multi-million pound rebuilding job at Ibrox.

Some fans are keen for more cash to be spent to bolster Warburton’s squad ahead of what they hope will be a Premiership return next term.

And, when asked if he trusted his chairman to deliver, Warburton said: “Yes, of course. I haven’t lost a player I’ve asked for yet.

“If I had gone for five in the summer, got three, lost two and been arguing about others then I could understand where you are coming from.

“But I wanted (Wes) Foderingham, (Rob) Kiernan, (James) Tavernier, (Martyn) Waghorn, (Andy) Halliday and (Jason) Holt. I got them.

“If we think a player is worth a certain figure then fine, if his club thinks otherwise then no problem.

“There was no issue there, the selling club has a right to put a price on it.

“I’m never going to talk about players until they are here.”

Having set his sights on a Premiership title challenge next season, supporters are now keen to see King back up his words with actions and provide Warburton with the finance required to improve the strength and depth of his squad.

The Englishman overhauled his first team pool for just a few hundred thousand pounds in the summer and has enjoyed an impressive strike rate with his signings to date.

And Warburton is satisfied with the progress that has been made at Ibrox in recent months.

He said: “With respect, what have I said all along? I’ve never said four or five players in January. It’s one or two.

“Four or five before next season, absolutely. Maybe five or six.

“The chairman is being supportive and has given comments. But I have never changed my story.

“I hope very much that people see how we do our business and the type of development potential we are looking to attract to the club.

“Yes you need some seniority now and again. But we are in a good place.

“When you say about fans’ frustration, we are five points clear at the top and the boys have done very well. So I’d hate to be three points behind.

“The chairman is over here. I have met with him and gone through it.

“It’s about strong foundations. We said that from the outset.

“We can’t look for short-term fixes. If we do that, we are on a slippery slope.

“It’s about having a strong, hungry squad. Look the roles of Kenny Miller, Lee Wallace, Dean Shiels. These players have a massive influence over what is a really young squad.

“That (people asking if the money is there) is just negativity. If we were eight points behind, fourth in the league and hadn’t signed anyone then we’d have an issue.

“But the fact is we are five points clear, in a cup final and have another cup match next weekend against Kilmarnock. We are in a good place.

“So if we don’t sign anyone are we suddenly a bad squad? And we suddenly weaker than everyone else?

“Every time you buy a player it is a risk. Will he find into the dressing room? Will he adapt to the surroundings and training methods?

“Bringing a player in doesn’t guarantee success. It guarantees a problem making sure he fits into your dressing room.”

Even if Warburton can get another deal over the line before the transfer window closes on Monday night, he will still need more reinforcements for the new campaign.

Questions have been asked in some quarters about the Gers’ strategy in the market as a series of players have been linked with a move to Ibrox.

But Warburton is determined to stick to his tried and trusted methods as he looks to do the right deals at the right price for Rangers.

He said: “How do you know what I’ve asked for? Some of our targets aren’t mentioned. Some are. I won’t talk about other club’s players.

“People need to look at what the club is trying to do and how the squad is being developed. Is there a certain type they are looking for?

“I see down south where you might have a squad that is on an average wage of, say, ten grand a week.

“Then they say they have a 35 grand a week striker coming in. And all the fans go: “Great”

“But you then have 23 players who are more than pee-d off because the disparity is wrong. If the new guy scores 35 goals then great but nine times out of ten that doesn’t happen.

“It’s important you go and get the right players to fit the mould.”
