St Mirren finally put their home hoodoo to bed with the 3-1 win over Alloa on Saturday, and Keith Watson hopes that the crumb of home comfort can lead to an unlikely Saints challenge for the promotion play-offs.

Watson was a pivotal figure in the comeback win for Alex Rae’s side, which remarkably was their first victory in Paisley all season.

“It was a massive, massive win for us,” Watson said, “Especially at home and hopefully we can go on a wee run now.

“It’s been a long time coming. It’s been such a disappointing season at home, especially for the fans who have been coming every week and watching us getting beat or drawing.

“It’s great to finally get that win. We defended well and Stevie Mallan settled the nerves with a good finish at the end.

“We’ve been working hard all week and we obviously knew how big the game was, especially at home.

“We were totally focused on the job and when we lost the early goal we didn’t let the heads go down.

“We scored another three good goals and we go away delighted.

“We’re not ruling the play-offs out at all. We’re just taking it game by game and hopefully we can pick up as many points as we can and see where that takes us.”

Manager Alex Rae has bolstered the St Mirren ranks to aid them in their bid to haul themselves up the Championship table, with the addition of the experienced Rocco Quinn, David Clarkson, Alex Cooper and Gary Irvine.

Watson thinks that these embellishments to the squad and the competition they will bring could be a crucial factor if Saints are to turn their season around.

"The manager has brought in some good players and if you look at these guys then they’ve all got experience of playing in the top league,” he said.

“I can remember playing against them when I was at Dundee United and it’s good to get players like that in the team.

“You know what you’re going to get from them and it adds good competition for places as well. I think we’ve got a very good squad now and the boys will need to be on their toes if they want to be in the team now.”

Saturday was an afternoon of ups and downs for Watson, who got over the concession of an early penalty for a clearly accidental handball to bag a stunning equaliser that set the scene for the turnaround.

“The penalty was obviously a bit disappointing,” he said.

“It did hit my arm but I thought my arms were close to my body. It wasn’t a great hit and I don’t think it was going anywhere.

“To then get a yellow card as well was harsh, I didn’t mean to do it, and it was tough going down 1-0.

“To get the goal to get back in it was great and that set us up for the second half.

“I scored against Partick Thistle a few weeks ago and I’ve been getting a few in training, so the goals were coming!

“I said to one of the boys I was going to score today, and I did so that was fantastic!

“I just reacted and shifted the ball. It was a good hit and I was absolutely delighted when it hit the back of the net.”
