THERE have been many thrilling Scottish Cup Finals over the years and none more so than the 1990-1991 Scottish Cup Final which also had goals galore…

BIG JOE (Simshill) – On a recent visit to the Scottish Football Museum I saw footage of a very exciting cup final between Dundee United and Motherwell which Motherwell won 4-3.

I was just wondering if any other Scottish Cup Finals had finished with the same scoreline?

The game you are referring to is the 1990-1991 Scottish Cup Final which Motherwell won 4-3 after extra-time.

We need to go back 90 years to find the same scoreline in the 1900-1901 final between Hearts and Celtic with Hearts emerging victorious.

Strangely enough the previous year’s final (1899-1900) between Celtic and Queen’s Park also finished 4-3. This time in favour of Celtic.

These are the only three occasions when Scotland’s showpiece final has had a 4-3 result.

J. WRIGHT (Paisley) – I recently paid my first visit to the Scottish Football Museum (excellent, by the way) and while there I saw a small statuette of the Liverpool legend Billy Liddell. The only time I saw him play was in an International against Portugal at Hampden Park. I was very young at the time and, although I can remember that it was a very wet night and Billy Liddell scoring a wonder goal, I cannot remember any other details - can you help?

The match took place on May 4, 1955, and, as you remember, it was played in atrocious weather conditions, with driving rain and swirling wind.

Inside-left Tommy Gemmell of St Mirren opened the scoring for Scotland in the 7th minute and a 25-yard rocket from Billy Liddell after 36 minutes gave Scotland a 2-0 half-time lead.

Lawrie Reilly scored again in the 86th minute to give the Scots a 3-0 victory.

The crowd was just over 20,000.

Scotland: Younger (Hibs), Parker (Falkirk), Haddock (Clyde), Evans (Celtic), Young (Rangers, captain), Cumming (Hearts), Smith (Hibs), Robertson (Clyde), Reilly (Hibs), Gemmell (St Mirren), Liddell (Liverpool).

T. INGLIS (Kilmarnock) – I remember my home town team Darvel reaching the Junior Cup Final in 1976, and losing to Bo’ness. Could you give a wee bit more detail? Exact score, team line-ups and scorers?

Bo’ness defeated Darvel 3-0 in the Scottish Junior Cup Final in 1976.

The goals coming from Scobie, Miller and Temperley. The crowd was 20,161.

Bo’ness: Ferguson, Jim McQueen, McGuiness, Miller, John McQueen, McGeachie, Scobie, Balanowski, Mitchell, Temperley, Anderson.

Darvel: McLuskey, McAllister, Leckie, Perrie, Frew, Gilmour, Kirkland, Walker, Currie, Leonard, Morton.
