LEE HODSON wants to save Kilmarnock from relegation and then star for Northern Ireland in the European Championships.

So it is looking like a busy six months for the defender who arrived from MK Dons at the end of the transfer window.

The 24-year-old qualifies for Michael O'Neill's squad through his grandmother and would love the chance to play in the French finals.

But to do that, he has to play regularly and play well for the Rugby Park men who face Motherwell at Fir Park.

Hodson said: "It's vital for me to come and play football. It was a big part of the reason for wanting to come here on loan.

"Things like the finals don't come round that often and I needed to give myself the best opportunity to be involved and for the manager to come and watch me.

"If I don't make the squad at least I'll know I've given myself the best chance possible.

"I know Michael does come and watch us due to Josh Magennis being here. I just have to concentrate on performing every week and see what happens. If I can play every game then I'll give myself every opportunity."

Hodson has 15 caps but has some catching up to do if he is to play a part this summer.

Which is good news for Killie as they could do with some hungry players.

Hodson said: "I missed quite a few matches due to injury last season - I made the last four squads towards the end of it.

"It was fantastic to be part of things, including the night we played Greece to qualify. It was something I'll treasure for life.

"Not many people can say they've been there when their country has qualified for a major tournament.

"Going to the finals could be a once-in-a-lifetime thing so I want to give myself the best chance I can. Michael's done a great job and credit to the players, because they've had belief.

"If we can go to France with a positive mindset after finishing top of our group, then we've the World Cup qualifying campaign to come up as well so it's another exciting time."
