MARK WARBURTON was delighted Rangers made it through to the Scottish Cup quarter-finals at the second time of asking as his side left it late to see off Kilmarnock last night.

Striker Nicky Clark netted a dramatic last minute winner for the Light Blues as they set up a home tie against Dundee or Dumbarton next month.

Rangers opened the scoring through Martyn Waghorn inside two minutes but were pegged back as Rory McKenzie equalised for Lee McCulloch’s side.

With the replay heading for another half an hour of action, Clark converted a Barrie McKay corner in injury time to send the travelling Light Blue legions wild.

And boss Warburton was thrilled with an impressive showing from his side as the Gers clinched a deserved win and took another step towards Hampden.

He said: “I thought second half we were very good. We didn’t want to get involved in a cup fight, didn’t want a battle but the first 25 minutes were a battle.

“The last 15 minutes were better, then second half we wanted to control it and created chances, played out from the back and I was really pleased second half.

“It was a tremendous winner but we had shots blocked before it, the penalty on Kenny Miller was blatant.

“But we attacked, looked after the ball, were first to the ball with good energy but we were very good second half.

“Whether you beat a Northern Premier League team or a Premier League side you still go through or go out, it doesn’t matter who you play.

“Felt we should have got a result at Ibrox. We had fantastic away support and for players to get rewards in front of fans was pleasing.

“Dundee or Dumbarton, Ibrox has been good for us hope we get a full house.

“We had 9,000 fans, had a responsibility to come and deliver the result. Really pleasing for players and fans.

“It’s a tough game tonight at a tough place, got the result, over the two games we were stronger and performed well.

“It wasn’t scrappy, we deserved it, Killie worked hard but we deserved it.”

While there was delight for Rangers as they clinched a dramatic late winner, there was also concern for Warburton after top scorer Waghorn was forced off early on in Ayrshire.

The striker was injured in a collision with Steven Smith before he fired home from the spot and will be assessed today to determine whether he will be fit for the trip to Queen of the South on Sunday.

Warburton said: “Martyn was one of those - locked legs, don’t know if he caught the surface.

“He took the penalty, credit to him but we will see how he is. He is on crutches and we will see how he is in the morning.”
