Frank McAvennie has told Ronny Deila that if he wants to save his Hoops career that he needs to play the Celtic way.

In a week in which Neil Lennon, Davie Moyes and Malky MacKay have all been linked with the Celtic job, McAvennie has urged Deila to take a final throw of the dice by setting out his team in a way that gets bums back on seats at Celtic Park.

“He has to play with two up front,” he said. “He needs to give Leigh Griffiths a bit of support.

“The thing about Celtic is that it is not about winning games – it is also about how you win them.

“Take a look around the stadium on a match day and fans are staying away in their droves. The only way to get them back through the gates is to play a good brand of exciting, attacking football.

“Celtic fans are used to the team playing a certain way.

“I don’t know what comes next or whether or not there will be a change of manager. I never like talking about someone’s job when they are in it because it is very unfair.

“But the likes of John Collins who is in there with Ronny knows all about the Celtic way and how the team should be playing. It is time to change the system and win back some faith from the supporters.”

And McAvennie also believes that whoever is in charge next season, the club need to be prepared to splash some cash.

In all likelihood Rangers will be in the SPFL next term and McAvennie believes that there has to be resources made available to cope with any threat that will come from the Ibrox side.

The former Hoops forward has maintained that he is not jumping on the bandwagon of those who want Deila ousted from his position, however he does believe that unless there is a significant change in policy that fans will vote with their feet.

“I feel a bit for Ronny just now because you have everyone talking about wanting his job and that has got to put you under a bit of pressure,” he said.

“We have all seen the names that have all been linked with it this week and over the last few months. I reckon they would all be welcomed by the support but I just can’t see any of them wanting that job with the current restrictions that are in place.

“Rangers will be up against Celtic next season and whether the club feel that Ronny can still take the team forward if he wins a double is their decision but if that is the case then there has to be some money to do it in Europe.”

And McAvennie believes that the 23 players that have come into the club under Deila are not all down to the manager’s signing policy.

“Ronny has not signed all of those players,” he said. “There are a lot of very average players at the club just now and someone has to put their hand up and take responsibility for that.

“The signings need to be players that excite the supporters. “
