GRAEME SOUNESS is confident Mark Warburton won’t make a speedy return to England and jump ship at his first opportunity to leave Ibrox.

The Rangers boss has been linked with a handful of positions in recent months and his stock remains high south of the border following a successful spell with Brentford.

Warburton has guided Rangers to the Championship title and Petrofac Training Cup in recent days and is now targeting a Scottish Cup final berth when his side face Celtic on Sunday.

But former Light Blues boss Souness insists the Englishman should think carefully about his next move if clubs come calling for his services in months or years to come.

Glasgow Times:

He said: “He has done very well and people will be looking at him. Of course that’s a constant worry and it’s only something he can answer.

“But do you leave Rangers to take any job in the Premier League? I don’t think so.

“You have to be careful. I think he’s a shrewd, intelligent man. I don’t think he’d be jumping ship for any old job in the Premier League.

“I can only talk about my experience but in my time the job here was up there with the very best. It’s a great job.

“The finance gap has always been there. Going back about 10 years there were players who could have joined Rangers or Norwich and they chose Norwich.

“You think, how could they choose Norwich? But that’s not new, but it’s only getting greater every year.”

It has been an impressive debut campaign at Ibrox for Warburton but Rangers will face bigger challenges when they make the step up to the Premiership next term.

Many fans will expect the Gers to set their sights on the top flight title but Souness knows the Light Blues squad will need to be strengthened in the summer.

He said: “They still get 40,000 every other week. How many clubs would that see that?

“It would happen at Celtic, Liverpool, maybe Man Utd, if you think they got 50,000 after Tommy Docherty got them relegated.

“But there’s maybe only a handful of clubs in the world who would keep that level of support.

“It’s asking a lot for Rangers to come up and win it next year. But if they can go and make a fight of it and take it to the last few games, that would be a successful season.

“They are going in to the unknown this weekend and they will face the unknown every week next year.

“The manager will want to strengthen and it will be really interesting to see what finances are available to him.

“There’s no magic wand as a manager. He will want to get more better players.”
