IT was with a heavy heart that Stirling’s Cameron Brodie has had to turn his attentions to the Commonwealth Games in 2018 after seeing his Olympic dreams evaporate in Glasgow.

Heading into the 2016 British Swimming Championships with high hopes, Brodie could only finish fourth in the 200m butterfly behind surprise winner Adam Mallett, and runner-up Mark Szaranek of Edinburgh University, ending any hopes of making the British team in Rio this summer.

Brodie said: “I’m incredibly disappointed. I don’t feel like that’s the best reflection of where I’m at. I tried my best. I was nowhere near where I thought I was.

“I gave it my all this season, and if it’s not paid off now, I’m sure it will pay off at some point. But the time I really needed it to pay off was now.

“I’ve always wanted to keep going until 2018, that excites me to go to the next Commonwealth Games, so that one will be the next one for me unfortunately.”

Elsewhere, Hannah Miley was back in action following her 400m individual medley crown on the opening night.

Miley competed in the heats of the 800m freestyle before coming home fifth in the 200m breaststroke in 2:28.38.

Finally Warrender Baths swimmer Keri-Anne Payne qualified for Thursday’s 800m freestyle final in second place.

Payne, who will attempt to book her open water spot in Brazil in June, but has been warming up for that in Glasgow, said: “I was really impressed with myself for making the final and doing the two minutes that I did in the morning and I think a lot of people were as well. What it’s said to the open water world is that I’m capable of doing that.”
