Ronny Deila has backed Tom Rogic to get over his horror spot-kick miss in the sudden death penalty shoot-out against Rangers on Sunday.

The Australian midfielder came off the bench at Hampden and made an immediate impact on the game. It was his goal that levelled the tie in extra-time to take the game to spot-kicks but he ballooned the definitive penalty over the bar to give Rangers a 5-4 win.

Television pictures showed that the ball might have moved slightly before he kicked it which would explain the miss, but in any case Rogic was inconsolable as made his way into the Celtic dressing room.

Stefan Johansen was pushed away as he tried to get off the pitch as quickly as possible, but Deila has backed Rogic to lift himself following the miss.

“We practised penalties last week but it is always difficult because when you practise without pressure it is nothing,” he said. “Taking a penalty in a situation like this is tough.

“It is just a lottery. Anything can happen and any team can win.

“It is not an easy thing to do.

“Tom will be fine. He is a strong boy mentally. Of course he was gutted. You can understand that. But he will come back from this. He has the ability and the talent but he also has the strength needed to let it go and be a stronger player for the experience.

“But right now, it is not easy. It takes time to accept it and get over it but he will do that."

And while it would be stretching the point to say that Deila found a positive at Hampden, he did applaud Leigh Griffiths for netting his spot kick – a week after saying that Craig Gordon would take a penalty before he did.

“There doesn’t seem many positives just now but I was pleased for Leigh because he had missed last week,” said Deila. “It takes a lot of courage to do that and it was a good kick. That will do him good.”

And while Deila is a man standing on the precipice now, he insisted that he has to take something from Hampden.

“In defeat there is always something to be learned – about yourself, about the players,” he said. “That is not an easy thing to take in at this time because everything is so raw.

“But we will learn from this as a team.”
