Alan McManus recovered from a two-frame deficit to beat Ali Carter 13-11 and reach the World Championship quarter-finals.

The 45-year-old Glaswegian had drawn on his renowned tactical ability to hang in the game during a difficult second session, but two-time finalist Carter would still have fancied his chances with a 9-7 lead.

McManus, though, won the first three frames of Saturday's morning session and retained his lead after the next two were shared.

Carter fell 12-10 behind after a horrendous miscue on the black, but produced a fine 100 break to prolong the match into a 24th frame.

But McManus got over the line to set up a clash with either Ricky Walden or John Higgins, who begin their second-round match on Saturday evening.

It will be the veteran's second quarter-final appearance in three years, having beaten Higgins and Ken Doherty to reach the same stage in 2014 before losing to Mark Selby. He reached the semi-finals in 1992 and 1993, in his second and third seasons on the professional tour.

On the other table, Sam Baird continued to acquit himself well on his second visit to the Crucible, but saw Selby pull away into a 9-7 lead.

Having beaten Michael White in the first round and shared the opening session 4-4 against the world number one, the Devonian won Saturday's first frame before being pegged back.

Selby took a 9-6 lead before Baird won an important last frame to keep the match alive going into the evening's deciding session.
