MARTYN WAGHORN reckons the team spirit within the Ibrox ranks has been a key contributor to Rangers’ success this season.

Mark Warburton’s side are just 90 minutes away from a unique Treble this term as they look to add the Scottish Cup to their Championship and Petrofac Training Cup titles.

It has been a campaign to remember for the Light Blues as they have turned in a series of impressive performances and clinched a Premiership return.

Waghorn was crucial to the cause with 28 goals before he was injured against Kilmarnock in February and the Englishman is loving life north of the border.

He said: “There are boys in this team with so much history and who have been through so much at this club and that just makes you want to do that bit more.

“To be playing in front of 50,000 every week and always strive to be better week in and week out is what gets you through.

“You have to be a good lad to be part of this group and we certainly have that.

“We have been through the lot; when we first lost against St Johnstone there were a lot of questions asked but we responded fantastically well.

“The way we are and the way the gaffer has brought us together means we are young, hungry and want to achieve a lot of things and we have a real chance to do that.

“The boys are all tuned into that, they are ready, they are working and they know they can make history again.”

“I don’t think you can have an ego when you play for Rangers; you have to be 100% committed to the cause and you have to be ready to fight for the shirt.”

Waghorn could yet have a part to play once again for Rangers this term as he looks to fire Warburton’s side to victory over Hibernian at Hampden next month.

The striker was named Players’ Player of the Year at the Gers’ annual awards ceremony on Sunday evening as he received the backing of his Ibrox team-mates.

And Waghorn admits his first campaign in Scottish football has gone even better than he expected as he has become a firm favourite with fans and a key member of Warburton’s squad.

He told rangers.co.uk: “If I’m being honest, no. I came here with a target in mind and coming off the back of a disappointing year personally for me last year, I wanted to hit the ground running and do well for the team.

“I’m over the moon with my first season here and it’s surpassed all of my expectations. To be challenging for three trophies in your first year is quite incredible, and I’ve said it time and time again, the set of boys have made it so enjoyable, as have the coaching staff and they are just a great group of lads to be a part of.

“We always go out there with a smile on our face knowing we have that group of lads supporting us.

“You hear about Rangers and what the club has been through over the last four or five years, but to come here and still get the support we have had and to go to away games and pack three stands is quite incredible and you don’t get that anywhere else in the world.

“It’s incredible turning up week-in, week-out knowing you have them behind you.”
