I was in Norway the day that the Hillsborough disaster happened and I remember watching it unfold on my television screen. Because of the translation, it took me some time to realise the enormity of what was a desperate tragedy. But I have to be honest and say that Hillsborough always evokes a sense of what might have been from a game that was played between Celtic and Nottingham Forest in November 1983 in the UEFA Cup. All the problems that were evident at Hillsborough were there that night – inadequate policing, over-crowding and an old stadium – and the only reason a disaster was avoided was because the fences at the front were not boxed in so the fans stuck in pens could scale them. The game was stopped for a spell, but it was a terrifying experience.
