Rangers star Martyn Waghorn is hoping he will finally complete the road to Hampden – after being a frustrated observer on the sidelines as the Gers enjoyed two glorious trips to the national stadium.

The 25-year-old is desperate to experience a victory over Hibs in the William Hill Scottish Cup final after watching on injured as Rangers won the Petrofac Cup and beat Old Firm rivals Celtic in the semi-finals of the domestic showpiece.

Waghorn, who was Rangers’ top-scorer during the Ibrox club’s march to the Scottish Championship crown with 28 goals, also missed out on the title-winning knees-up.

But having made his return to the first team against St Mirren in the final league game of the campaign last Sunday, the Englishman is eager to make sure his injury-induced spell has a silver lining.

Waghorn told the Rangers website: “The Scottish Cup would be a nice way for me to cap my season off after missing the two cup games as Hampden.”

“A lot of hard work has to go in before that game and I’m really looking forward to it and excited for it.

“For both games at Hampden I was down at the dugout with the boys and when we beat Celtic I think I was the first one on the pitch.

“It was a fantastic moment and one of those times that will live with you forever.

“I’ve never had a taste of Europe and it’s obviously where every player wants to be playing so to win the cup and get that would be amazing.”

Waghorn has been a revelation for Mark Warburton’s side this season but the former Sunderland, Leicester and Wigan hitman knows the hard work is only just beginning as Rangers prepare for life back in the top flight.

He added: “I’m sure it’s going to be tough. However, the teams that we have played this season haven’t been a big gap between us. The standard has been good and has been competitive and high.

“Teams are going to make it difficult for us no matter where we are going to go, but it’s about how we manage it and about how we play and what we do.”

“Everyone knows their place here and that you have to work hard for the jersey and everyone is desperate to do that.

“Each and every one of the boys is determined to do their best for this club.”
