DAVID MOYES would only become Celtic manager if earning a top wage was no longer important to him - according to former Parkhead supremo Jock Brown.

The former Everton and Manchester United boss is one of the leading candidates to replace Ronny Deila for next season.

Brown and Moyes go back a long way and the one-time Celtic General Manager would like to see Moyes back at Celtic, although acknowledged he would have to operate at a different level to the one he got used to in England.

Brown said: "Davie is in a different world now.

“If you want Davie to go to Celtic, it would need to be on the basis that he has made so much money that it’s not important anymore and he just fancies doing the job."

Brown was at Celtic when the club faced Preston North End, where Moyes began his managerial career, in a friendly and back in 1997 he was struck about how he went about his job.

Brown said: "I have high regard for David.

“Celtic played two games, an underage youth and a first-team game. What I liked most about the occasion was hearing David Moyes tell his players in the dressing room: 'You are about to see how football is played because Celtic play football the right way. Watch how they play.'

“It was the style of play he was trying to get into Preston at the time.

“I spoke to him one-on-one about it and he explained how he was desperate to Celtic down because football was played properly, the Celtic way.

“Would that hold sway in his decision? Yeah, probably. But you are now talking about 15 years on.

“What have Davie’s experiences done to him in that intervening period? What influence has that had on him?

“I don’t know, I haven’t spoken to him in a long time. “But, at that time, you would have said he was a serious potential candidate.
