JAMES TAVERNIER insists there will be no Championship hangover for Rangers when they set their sights on Scottish Cup glory on Saturday.

Mark Warburton’s side return to action after a three week break when they face Hibernian at Hampden aiming for their third medal of the season.

After clinching the second tier title, lifting the Petrofac Training Cup and then beating Celtic in the semi-finals, Rangers struggled for form in the closing stages of the league campaign.

The champions took just two points from their matches with Hibernian, Alloa, Livingston and St Mirren but Tavernier is confident some rest and a run-out against Tottenham is the preparation Warburton’s side required for a shot at cup success.

He said: “I wouldn’t say there’s been much down time. There’s not been any games but the friendly with Spurs was a great test for us.

“It got the intensity back up and was really good for the boys.

“We’ve not really had intensity like that apart from in the Celtic game. To have that before the final was fantastic for us.

“They had a youthful side out with some top players. It was really useful for us.

“It’s always hard when the season is almost over. You see it down south as well, there’s sides maybe not performing that well and maybe once you’ve won the league the form does drop a little.

“We can switch it back on easily enough. You don’t need any motivation for a Scottish Cup final. The prize is massive. The boys will be raring to go.

“Hibs have obviously played a lot of games. I’ve been in play-offs myself and know what it’s like. Every game is like a cup final and you don’t know if they will be mentally drained. We will see.”

It has been a memorable campaign for Rangers to date but they are now focused on ending it with a third piece of silverware in the Ibrox trophy room.

Tavernier has played a huge part in the Light Blues’ success this season and the right-back hopes there is still more to come as the countdown continues to Hampden.

Tavernier said: “At the beginning of the season the objective was to win the league.

“We didn’t expect to get Celtic this year, we thought that would be next year. But our objective is to beat Celtic every time we play them.

“We have done really well winning the Petrofac Cup on top of promotion and it was be fantastic to top it off with the Scottish Cup.

“We all know if we don’t get the result at Hampden then we will be sitting on our holidays feeling regret. You want to finish the season on a high with a trophy.”

It is not just the lure of the silverware that will inspire Warburton and his players as they prepare for their biggest 90 minutes of the season and the resumption of their rivalry with Hibernian for the last time this term.

Victory at Hampden would clinch a Europa League spot for next season and Tavernier reckons Rangers would be well equipped to take on a continental challenge.

He said: “Could we cope in Europe? One hundred percent.

“We play good football, we like to pass the ball around, and when you get to the European stage there are a lot of sides like that.

“The team we have would be able to cope with Europe, we have good intensity in the side.

“It’s a different experience playing in the Europa League. There are foreign referees, different players, and new stadiums.

“Football is football but every country is a little different. It would be a great experience to get there.”
