MARK WARBURTON is keen to add experience to his Rangers squad as he chases a deal for midfielder Joey Barton.

The 33-year-old travelled north of the border at the weekend and was given a tour of Ibrox and Murray Park ahead of a potential switch this summer.

Barton was named in the Championship Team of the Year after helping Burnley clinch a return to the Premier League this term but has so far refused to agree a new deal at Turf Moor.

Rangers are set to find out in the coming days if they have done enough to secure the former Manchester City, Newcastle United and QPR star and boss Warburton is confident Barton will make an impact at Ibrox.

He said: "There are no secrets in Glasgow. He's a Burnley player still but he's a very talented individual, he offers an experience and the maturity we maybe need to add to the squad.

"He was in the Championship team of the year after a fantastic season for him and I'm sure he has many options but all we can do is show him what Rangers represents and see where that goes. He's sought after by many clubs so we'll see where it goes.”

The deal to sign Barton is not the only one that Warburton is pursuing at present as he also looks to clinch the signing of Croatian playmaker Niko Kranjcar.

Warburton has already held talks with the New York Cosmos star and is keen to add several players to his squad ahead of a shot at the Premiership title next term.

He told Sky Sports: "There are lots of options we are looking at. I don't like to talk about one specific player. What we have to do is get that balance. We have had a young, hungry team, superbly marshalled by the likes of Kenny Miller and Lee Wallace.

"Yes we need some maturity and experience but we don't want to lose the energy and intensity of how we play the game."
