RANGERS legend Derek Johnstone believes Hibernian should be forced to play Scottish Cup ties behind closed doors after the shameful scenes that tarnished Saturday’s final at Hampden.

Several Gers stars, including captain Lee Wallace, were assaulted as they made their way back to the dressing room after a 3-2 defeat for Mark Warburton’s side.

Thousands of Hibs fans poured from the stands and goaded Rangers supporters and running battles broke out all over the National Stadium before police finally restored order.

It is the second consecutive season where opposition supporters have invaded the pitch and made their way towards the Light Blue legions.

And Ibrox legend DJ believes the fans who ruined the big moment for Alan Stubbs’ side should be the ones who are punished most as the SFA launch an investigation into the disgraceful aftermath to the Hampden final.

He told SportTimes: “You only have to look back twelve months to the scenes we saw at Fir Park when the Rangers fans were goaded at the end of the play-off final.

“On that day, the Rangers fans did really well not to react. They were sick at the result and gutted that they were not getting promoted to the Premiership. They stood there and took it from the Motherwell supporters on the park.

“Motherwell fans were let off with a slap on the wrist, but there is no way that can happen this time that is for sure.

“It is a shame for the Hibs players because they have done their best and won the cup. It is the fans that have ruined the day for Hibernian Football Club.

“I am reluctant to say they should be banned from the Scottish Cup because the players have done nothing wrong. They did the business on the park.

“It is the fans. How do you punish fans? Maybe they should have to play a couple of games behind closed doors.

“It is early stages yet so we will have to see what unfolds in the coming days and weeks.

“The supporters are the ones that need to be punished. As for the club, there is not much they could have done and it was outwith their power.

“But something has to be done. If they get away with it, what is to stop the fans of everyone that plays at Hampden doing the same thing?

“I would imagine there would be a fine but they could be forced to play matches behind closed doors next season. The club will then suffer as a result of their fans’ actions.

“Decisive action has to be taken because you just cannot allow supporters to get away with what they did on Saturday. It is as simple as that.”
