BRENDAN RODGERS has made his first signing as Celtic manager with the appointment of Chris Davies as his assistant.

Davies has worked with Rodgers at Swansea and Liverpool and will make the move to Glasgow next week.

The appointment of Davies is the first step of the Rodgers rebuilding work as he puts his plans in place for the new Premiership campaign.

Like Rodgers, the 31-year-old was forced to retire from playing early due to injury but he has become a key right hand man to the Northern Irishman in recent years.

Davies is in his second spell at Reading having started his coaching career in London before spells at Leicester City and Hawke’s Bay United in New Zealand before he linked up with Rodgers at the Liberty Stadium in 2010.

“I am delighted to bring Chris to Celtic, he is a magnificent coach and someone I know will make a hugely positive contribution to the club,” Rodgers said.

“He is ready and prepared for the challenge at Celtic and I know that Chris, like myself, can’t wait to get going next season.

"He has worked with me previously, he is someone I know and trust and he will be a great addition to my team and to the club.”

Rodgers was given a warm welcome when he was named as Ronny Deila’s successor at Celtic Park on Monday evening, with several thousand supporters greeting him in the stands.

Fans are eagerly anticipating the new campaign as Rodgers looks to guide his side to a sixth successive top flight title and Davies is determined to play his part in further success for Celtic.

“Celtic is huge club with such a special place in world football,” Davies said.

“It is a great honour and a proud moment for me to be named assistant manager.

“I saw the scenes at Celtic Park on Monday and there are not many clubs or fans in the world who could have put on such a show.

"We know what Celtic fans bring to the club and we want to reward our fans every week with entertaining football that gets results.

“I have worked with Brendan over a number of years, as a player and a coach, and it will be fantastic to team up with him again.
