STEWART BURT has had over a decade of his mum Carol screaming support for him at the side of a boxing ring.

It even became so distracting for the up-and-coming Glasgow fighter that he was forced to ask her to stand outside during some of his bouts.

Now on the eve of his biggest fight ever, the mature 26-year-old is more than happy to have mum in the 8,000-strong crowd crammed into the SSE Hydro.

The talented welterweight is on the undercard of Ricky Burns’ world title fight against Michele Di Rocco tomorrow night when he takes on Robert Asagba (3-0-0), and he is comforted to know he will a few familiar faces – and voices- around him for his latest opportunity to carry on his undefeated professional record.

“My mum is mental for it, she’s probably my best promoter,” laughed Burt, who sits with five wins and only one draw to his name.

“She tells everybody and posts it all over Facebooke. The rest of my family do that as well but none more so than my mum, she loves it.

“She loves but hates it at the same time. You should hear her when I fight. She is the only person I can hear when I’m fighting.

“You can block out all the rest of the noise but every so often you’ll just hear her absolutely screaming. I don’t really know what she’s saying.

“She was apprehensive about my boxing and has been like that since day one. I used to tell her not to come to fights or if she does to stand outside while I’m fighting, and she’s actually done that a few times because she’s so vocal.

“I used to get really embarrassed about it because she’d scream the place down above everyone, but as time has got on I’ve got used to it and you realise that’s what mums are like.”

Turning to his opponent, Burt knows the man from Chadwell Heath in London will be a tough test.

It is one, though, that he knows he is ready for.

“Everything has been fine. I was pretty fit when we started camp because the week off after my last fight was spent in LA sparring. It’s about building on that.

“On paper it’s my toughest fight. He’s young, he’s undefeated and he’s going to come up here to do everything to maintain his record, but so will I.

“That’s what sets it up for a good fight. It’s going to be brilliant and I can’t wait.”
