JOEY BARTON certainly has a colourful past and he has a reputation that will follow him wherever he goes in football but I think he is a really good signing for Rangers.

He was a standout for Burnley as he helped them get back to the Premier League last season and was named in the Championship Team of the Year.

Joey might be 33 but he is a fit lad and he could easily play for another couple of years. Rather than being in a relegation battle down south, he has come to Rangers to win medals.

He said all the right things when he was unveiled on Tuesday and the Rangers fans will be really keen to see him in action and see if he can perform as well on the park.

There is no doubt he is still a quality player and he is a real leader. Rangers have big figures at the club, like Kenny Miller and Lee Wallace, but you need someone in the middle of the park and that will be Barton. He will be a terrific signing.

A lot of non-Rangers fans are saying he will cause trouble and he will get sent off. Well, time will tell.

As he said himself this week, he didn’t pick up a suspension in the Championship last season and he seems to have changed his ways after the host of issues he has had in the past.

Rangers have done really well to get him and it is a bit of a coup for Mark Warburton to be able to attract a player like Joey Barton to Ibrox.

The manager has always said that he needed a bit of experience in the team and the side did need someone to come in and do the job that Joey will in the middle of the park.

I think it will prove to be a really good bit of business and hopefully there is plenty more to come in the next few weeks.
