It is has finally come to that day of the year again that football fans around the world have been longing for – the Champions League final.

The event seems to get bigger and bigger each year and I know BT Sport are delighted to be providing exclusive coverage of this year’s event from Milan.

It will of course be contested by two teams not only familiar with each other domestically but with going head to head in this fixture two years ago. In 2014 we saw Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid battle to be crowned kings of Europe, and after Barcelona took the honours last season, here we are again.

I have a funny feeling the game we will see tonight will not be too different to the one we witnessed back in Lisbon when Real won 4-1 in extra-time. For most of the game there was nothing between the teams and it’s a similar dynamic between two groups that know each other pretty intimately.

Diego Simeone was there last time as Atletico boss and obviously Zinedine Zidane is now in the opposite dug out, but it’s still Real Madrid’s philosophy. I think that’s what ties both of the the Real teams together. Yes then manager may be different but their attitude to how they play their football is much the same as it was two years ago.

Atletico are very awkward opponents, just ask Bayern Munich, Barcelona or any of the teams they have put out up until this point. Putting out the Catalan giants made a lot of people sit up and take notice.

It is the city of Madrid’s night. The game may be played in the San Siro in Milan but it is a fantastic spectacle for the Spanish capital.

Some football fans may have thought that it wasn’t a straightforward draw for Barcelona, but not many would have predicted Atletico to come out on top. They did, and once you do that and knock out Bayern, you are entitled to think you have a terrific chance of being crowned European club champions.

It’s a very strong La Liga at the moment, just look what Sevilla did in the Europa League final by beating Liverpool. They have not even cracked the top four in Spain. There is depth there.

Atletico are not a typically Spanish style of football like Barcelona or Real Madrid, but it’s Simeone’s style. They are really well coached and very well drilled, they also have outstanding individual players like Antoine Griezmann who is having the season of his life. Fernando Torres has added that little bit of experience as well.

Simeone has always been intriguing to top clubs around Europe but Atletico suits him. He played for them, he’s a loyal guy and I think he sees something there that he wouldn’t have elsewhere. He has a team that has been put together in his image. As a team they are quite similar to how he was as a player. The annoyance factor is rather high and you could even use the word pesky!

They are a force to be reckoned with and anyone who thinks they are severe underdogs simply hasn’t been paying attention.

They are there on merit and even though some of their players may not be household names like some of their final counterparts, as a team they are very difficult to beat.

In terms of Real, have they progressed in those two years?

It comes in little cycles with peaks and troughs, and I’m not sure if they are significantly better. You take your hat off to Cristiano Ronaldo who has answered every critic.

Nobody could ever have said the Portuguese was a poor player but there was always some subtle talk of him being all about himself and not being a team player.

That has got better as he’s got older and his career has progressed, and this could play a key part in tonight’s final.

I’m not sure if they are better or worse. They beat Atletico two years ago and they are capable of winning this one again. It’s a slightly different team with a different coach, but they can still beat you with their fluent Real Madrid way.

It is such a tight final to call, and we can only hope it is filled with the same amount of drama as the last time the pair met on such a grand stage.
