ALEX MACDONALD reckons Joey Barton is the ideal man to fit into the Rangers starting line-up as the champions set their sights on Premiership glory.

The midfielder put pen-to-paper on a two-year deal with Mark Warburton’s side last week as he became the fourth arrival of the summer at Ibrox.

After inspiring Burnley to clinch their return to the Premier League at the first time of asking this term, Barton will now look to play his part in a top flight title challenge north of the border.

And MacDonald is delighted with the deal as boss Warburton was able to pull off a shock swoop to bring the 33-year-old to Rangers.

"I think his signing is absolutely brilliant," he told rangers.co.uk. "Personally I would have liked another nine like him; he is my type of player.

“I haven’t seen much of him play but from what I have seen I think it’s a good move from the club. There is no question that he is the type of player Rangers needed.

“I think any player could fit into the team right now, the movement is good and the players are very aware of each other so I don’t think he’ll have any trouble bedding in.

“It is down to the manager who comes in and hopefully there will be a few more but I think they needed a bit of experience in the bigger league.

“I think his character will be a positive, everybody loves to see what people write or say and I think he is the character to do that and he will have more followers than he thinks he will have if he says the right things.”
