SCOTLAND left-back Emma Mitchell admits it took 24 hours for the grandeur of Wembley Stadium to sink in after winning a Women’s FA Cup winners’ medal there last month.

The 23-year-old, who is expected to be a key player in tomorrow night’s Euro 2017 qualifier against Iceland at Falkirk Stadium, was a member of the Arsenal side who beat Chelsea 1-0 in front of nearly 33,000 fans at England’s ground.

“We went to the stadium the day before the game and the English girls were all like: ‘Oh God, it’s Wembley’,” Mitchell said. “Being Scottish I wasn’t really that bothered.”

That perception changed the following day and the Fifer said: “I was probably more nervous warming up than during the game itself when I saw all the fans. Winning the FA Cup has definitely been the highlight of my career. It was an unforgettable day and I loved it.”

Mitchell played in both of Scotland’s previous games against Iceland, which resulted in a draw and a win, but as both were friendlies as both were friendlies they had none of the resonance of tomorrow’s game. Victory for Scotland should see Anna Signeul’s side qualify for next year’s finals in the Netherlands.

Mitchell wants Scotland to qualify for the Euros to keep her Arsenal team-mates quiet, as they are still dining out on England finishing third in last year’s World Cup.

“We’ve got a good bunch of girls at Arsenal, but they never really see Scotland as a threat,” she said.
