Leigh Griffiths was quite right to say that he might struggle to replicate the heights he scaled this season.

You have to hand it to the lad – 40 goals is a phenomenal amount. He is right to say that 20 is the level any Celtic striker should be aiming at and I am sure that if gets there that the intention will be to kick on and you just never know what can follow on then.

I still maintain that a top class striker should be high on the agenda this summer and I do think that if I was in Brendan Rodgers’ position then I would be looking to pair Griffiths with someone else up front.

Steven Fletcher is out of contract and has been linked with Celtic – again – and although I am not sure how much substance there is to those reports, a player of that calibre and at that level is the right direction to head in.

Certainly, though, Griffiths has been sensible in taking a lot of the hype off his shoulders. Had he come out and said that he wanted to better 40 next season he would have put himself under too much pressure.

He was thoroughly deserving of the Ladbrokes Player of the Year award after what has been a very special season for the striker. Who is to say that he won’t go out and do it again – especially given the reputation that Rodgers has for attacking football – but he will benefit from having another striker to play alongside.
