JOSH WINDASS has set his sights on Premiership glory with Rangers next season as he prepares to make his move north of the border to Ibrox.

The midfielder put pen-to-paper on a four-year deal with the champions in January and will be joined in Light Blue by Accrington Stanley team-mate Matt Crooks next term.

Windass saw his time at the Wham Stadium come to a disappointing end as John Coleman’s side missed out on automatic promotion to League One in the final seconds of the season.

And Stanley were then denied a dream date at Wembley and another shot at the third tier as they lost in the play-off semi-finals to AFC Wimbledon.

Windass will move to Glasgow next week ahead of Mark Warburton’s side returning to pre-season training as preparations are stepped up for the new campaign.

And the 22-year-old has lofty ambitions for his first term in Scottish football as the Gers look to launch a top flight title bid at the first time of asking next season.

Windass told SportTimes: “At Accrington this season, we were favourites to get relegated but our expectation was to win the league and we nearly did it.

“The aim for Rangers will be no different next season. I will work hard in pre-season and hopefully I can get myself into the starting eleven and we will see how things go from there.

“Last year I wanted 20 goals and I only got 17 so I was a bit disappointed with that. But I was injured for a bit of the season.

“I do set quite high expectations of myself. Maybe I should keep them quieter so when I don’t reach them nobody knows!

“When myself and Crooksy signed, the manager was really straightforward and he didn’t beat around the bush. He said he wanted to get back into the Premiership and we want to win the Premiership and beat Celtic to the league.

“He didn’t say ‘well, we want to have a couple of years at this and a couple of years at that’. He just went straight to the point and said ‘we are going up there to win the league’.

“That speaks volumes for how ambitious he is and how he wants to succeed as a manager. I am looking forward to playing for him.

“I have got some really good friends who have played under him at Brentford and they have all said unbelievable things about him so I can’t wait to work with him.”

The captures of Windass and Crooks were the first Warburton completed as he looked forward to a crack at the Premiership next season.

The Stanley pair were followed into Ibrox by Liverpool kid Jordan Rossiter before Warburton completed a superb transfer coup to land midfielder Joey Barton on a two-year deal.

And Windass reckons the deal for the sought after star was a sign Rangers are heading in the right direction on Warburton’s watch.

He said: “Getting Joey was a big signing for the club. He is a big name, he has played in the Premier League and he has had a great career.

“He was in the Championship Team of the Year so he has proven that he can still play at a really high level.

“He will be one of the best players in the Premiership so it was a great signing to get him in. I am looking forward to playing alongside him.”
