SUNDERLAND have announced that Scotland striker and reported Celtic target Steven Fletcher has been released.

The former Hibs forward's contract expired at the end of the season, after he had been sent on loan to Marseille in January. 

There have been reports that Scottish champions Celtic are interested in the 29-year-old, who is now a free agent.

Fletcher joined the Premier League club from Wolves in 2012 and scored 23 goals in 108 appearances in the North-East.

He scored four Premier League goals for Sunderland last season before moving to France on loan in January, where he struck three times for Marseille.

Danny Graham has also been let go by the Black Cats and is believed to have attracted the interest of both Celtic and Rangers.

A statement on the club website read: "Sunderland AFC today confirmed the club’s retained player list for the 2016-17 season.

"The list shows those players currently under contract with Sunderland AFC, or who have contract offers pending.

"Players out of contract as of June 30, 2016 include Wes Brown, Steven Fletcher, Danny Graham and Steve Harper."
