Following his departure Scott Brown, Adan Collin and Aaron Lennox all featured, but Brown was then released and Colin returned to parent club Rotherham.

Alexander made 35 Premiership appeaerances for Hearts last season and the 38-year-old has signed a one-year deal at Pittodrie.

He said: "My agent was in contact with a lot of teams and Aberdeen were one of them and I am lucky that the manager had a bit of interest in me and pursued it.

"I think as a squad Aberdeen have an all-round strength, and as a team they're good going forward, solid at the back. I've always been impressed by them and was whenever I played against Aberdeen last season.

"From those games I know they counter attack really well, have loads of pace, get the ball in the box and cause you problems, they are an attractive team to watch and score goals.

"And Aberdeen have a fantastic manager in Derek McInnes and I'm really looking forward to working under him.

"There are exciting times ahead at Aberdeen and I am delighted to be part of it.

"I know Willo Flood (from my time at Cardiff). He's a good lad. Every time I see him we have a chat. He's a friendly face in the dressing room, but I'm sure I'll get to know the boys over the course of the next couple weeks so I'm looking forward to it and can't wait to get going."

"Recently I've had a couple of good seasons under my belt and I'd like to think I have another couple of years left in me and I want to play. I've came here to do that, the manager knows that and we just have to see what happens.

"I've got the opportunity to come here and be involved in European football. I'm grateful to the manager for bringing me here and I am really looking forward to the European games and the start of the league campaign."

Lewis joins after making eight Championship appearances while on loan at Fulham last season.

The 28-year-old  made his name at Peterborough United, where he made 187 appearances from 2008-2012, but has struggled to usurp Scotland international David Marshall at Cardiff.

"I spoke to the manager on the phone a few times at length and he told me his plans and I'm really looking forward to getting involved," he said.Glasgow Times: Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes.

"Working with the manager is definitely something which attracted me to the club, he has got a good reputation so I am looking forward to working with him and also with Gordon Marshall the goalkeeping coach who also has a good reputation within the game.

"I've got a few friends who have played in Scotland and a friend of mine Kevin McNaughton was here. He told me that it's a great club and Aberdeen is a great place and that I'd really enjoy it. So I had no concerns about coming up here. I'm looking forward to pre-season and getting my head down and working hard.

"The European games were a massive attraction. Hopefully we can get through the first few rounds and get as far as we can. From what I've been told we've had a tough route the last few years so hopefully with a few decent draws we can go as far as we can.

"A lot of goalkeepers when they get into their late 20's and 30's become better players so hopefully I can do the same."
