SCOTLAND star Matt Phillips has backed Matt Gilks to be a hit north of the border as he closes in on a move to Rangers.

The keeper was at Murray Park on Wednesday afternoon for talks over a potential switch to Glasgow following his release from Burnley.

Boss Mark Warburton is in the market for a goalie after Cammy Bell quit the club to join Dundee United on a two-year-deal.

Warburton is keen to recruit experienced competition for number one Wes Foderingham as he continues to bolster his ranks ahead of the big kick-off and a shot at the Premiership title next term.

Gilks would certainly fit the bill after a successful career south of the border that saw him turn out for Blackpool during their time in the Premier League.

And former Seasiders team-mate Phillips is confident the 34-year-old will make a positive impression in the Scottish game.

He said: “I was with Gilo at Blackpool and in a few Scotland squads too and you know you’re getting a goalkeeper you can rely on.

“He’s a good lad, dependable and a terrific player as well. He’s got a few caps and been in a lot of squads so anyone with that kind of international pedigree is obviously a very capable player.

“He’s a good lad around the place which goes a long way to helping the atmosphere in a dressing room.

“Maybe people down south might be surprised that players like this are coming to Scottish football but there are big clubs up here and some of the football is of a really high standard.

“Gilo had a lot of strengths as a keeper. He commanded his area well, he was a good shot-stopper and was very vocal too which is what you want.

“You want a goalkeeper who will sort out his defence and keep everyone right and he was like that.”
