FRANCE are one of the favourites to lift the Euro 2016 Championship and nearly went all the way to the final in the 1958 World Cup but found Brazil too good for them in the semi-final...

JOHN (Paisley) – Could you supply the results for France in the 1958 World Cup.

France were in Group Two and beat Paraguay 7-3 in their first match. They then lost 3-2 to Yugoslavia and beat Scotland 2-1 in their last match.

In the quarter-finals they met Northern Ireland and won 4-0. In the semi-finals they faced Brazil and lost 5-2. They played West Germany in the third place match and won 6-3. Their inside-forward Fontaine was the highest goalscorer of the tournament with 13 goals.

HI HI FAN (Rutherglen) – I had the pleasure of attending the inaugural Third Lanark Hall of Fame Dinner recently and meeting Matt Gray one of the inductees. Can you give me a rundown of his career?

A great header of the ball and a noted goalscorer, Matt signed for Thirds in 1957 from Maryhill Juniors.

In almost six seasons at Cathkin, he scored 126 goals in 217 League, League Cup, and Scottish Cup matches, and scored for Thirds after only two minutes in the 1959 League Cup Final which Thirds lost 2-1 to Hearts.

In February 1963, Matt was transferred to Manchester City for the unusual fee of £31,001.

Reportedly, Matt himself asked for the extra £1 to be added to the fee to make him the most expensive Third Lanark player to be transferred.

Matt scored 23 goals in 100 matches for City before moving to South Africa where he played for a number of teams.

JIM (Dennistoun) – It was sad to hear that ex-Celt Bobby Carroll had passed away recently. Can you give me some details of his football career?

Bobby signed for Celtic as an outside right on September 23, 1957, from Irvine Meadow. He played 78 times for Celtic and scored 27 goals.

On September 26 he scored Celtic’s first-ever goal in European competition against Valencia in the Fairs Cities Cup.
