TABLE toppers Glasgow Tigers were beaten by bottom side Scunthorpe on Sunday in what team boss Stewart Dickson admitted was a shock defeat.

The Tigers led in the early stages at the Eddie Wright Raceway but fell away to leave Lincolnshire with nothing, losing 51-39.

It was all the more disappointing as a sizeable Glasgow crowd had travelled to watch the Premier League tie following the British Grand Prix in Cardiff last night.

Dickson said: "I'm more disappointed for the supporters than anything.

"I know the riders don't mean to lose, but it was a bit frustrating watching the opposition ride towards the fence - which you've got to do at Scunthorpe - while most of our riders weren't on the proper race line.

"I'm pretty sure our big travelling support must've noticed that as well.

"People will look at it and say it's a shock result, because they were bottom and we were top, and I think they're right.

"If we haven't realised already, we need to realise that when we go to these places, these teams are gunning for us. We're classed as favourites and we are big scalps, and unfortunately this is what we're getting.

"They built it up as the biggest meeting of the season and they raced as if it was the biggest of the season.

"I'm not going to single out or mention individual riders but I think you can look at the score chart and it tells its own story."

Glasgow led by four after Richie Worrall and Rene Bach bagged a 5-1 in heat three and kept that margin until heat seven, when the home side's fightback begun.

They landed a 5-1 of their own in heat eight and despite a similar scoreline for the Tigers in heat 12, the Scorpions finished with three heat advantages.

The Tigers must regroup quickly as they face a testing trip to Edinburgh on Friday night in the first leg of their KO Cup tie, without Worrall - today's top scorer - who is racing for Belle Vue.

Meanwhile, Stewart Dickson will find out in the next couple of days whether or not Nike Lunna has recovered sufficiently from a hand injury to return for the meeting - but insists he will only make his way back into the side after he's had the chance to practice.

Tigers scorers: Richie Worrall 10+1, Richard Lawson 8, Aaron Summers 8, Arthur Sissis (guest) 5+2, Danny Ayres 4+1, Rene Bach 4, Fernando Garcia 0.
