PORTUGAL’S 1-0 victory against France in Sunday’s Euro 2016 Championship Final was their second major final appearance. In their other final they lost 1-0 to Greece during the Euro 2004 Championship…

R. JOHNSTON (Glasgow) Having watched Portugal’s 1-0 extra-time win over France on Sunday, it made me cast my mind back to their last final when they played Greece in 2004. Who did Portugal beat in the semi-final in 2004 and who were the goalscorers? Also, who scored the winning goal for Greece in the final?

In the semi-final against Holland Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring with a header to give Portugal a first-half lead.

Nuno Maniche doubled their lead in the second half before an own goal from Jorge Andrade handed the Dutch a lifeline, but Portugal held out 2-1 to reach their first final of a major championship.

In the final, Angelos Charisteas scored the only goal of the game from a header in 57 minutes to give the Greeks victory and cause a major shock.

G. DONALDSON (Glasgow) Can you confirm that Rangers scored nine goals away to St Johnstone in a League Cup tie in the early Sixties.

This match was played on the August 15, 1964, at Muirton Park and it was a League Cup tie. Rangers led 4-1 at half-time and added five more in the second half to make it 9-1.

Man of the match was Rangers right-winger Willie Henderson although he did not score he laid on a few of the goals with his superb wing play.

Scorers were McLindon for St Johnstone and for Rangers it was Forrest (4), Brand (2), McLean (2) and Baxter (1).

The attendance was 15,000 and in the six section matches Rangers scored 26 goals.

GERRY (Blantyre) My uncle keeps going on about playing in his school team with a goalkeeper called Goldie who eventually signed for Celtic. Do you have any details of this goalkeeper, around the late 1950s, and did he play any first team games for Celtic?

This would be Willie Goldie who signed two times for Celtic in successive seasons. His first senior team was Airdrie where he spent three seasons between 1955 and 1958, making 29 first team appearances.

Celtic signed him in January 1960 and released him in April 1960, subsequently resigning him in August of that year as back up to Frank Haffey and John Fallon.

He made his only first team appearance in October 1960 against his old team Airdrie at Broomfield Stadium, Celtic losing the match 2-0.

Reliable sources liken the story of his selection that day to schoolboy fiction.

Apparently Willie was not in the official party for that game and was walking up to Broomfield wearing his supporters colours as the Celtic team bus passed.

The players pointed him out and the bus stopped to allow him on. The chairman at the time Bob Kelly is alleged to have been so impressed by his dedication to the Club, that he decided Willie would replace John Fallon in the team.

Willie left Celtic for Albion Rovers in 1961, where he played until an injury forced him to retire.
