Paul Maxwell has achieved cult hero status among supporters wherever he’s played in Junior football and is probably at the top end of his prime at 32 years of age.

Yet it’s looking like he will be without a club for the start of the new season.

A plethora of contract offers - several from Super Premier Division outfits - has left him anything but sick with worry about what the future holds for him.

However, Maxi has revealed himself to be in no rush to decide his next move.

The big striker’s three-year stint on the books of Irvine Meadow ended ignominiously with the Ayrshire giants suffering a dismal relegation fate at the end of last season.

That drop down a division culminated in a dressing room exodus of the playing squad taken to Meadow Park by former team boss Stevie Rankin.

But it set Maxi apart from his departing team-mates when the incoming Medda management team of Gareth Turner and Michael Wardrope offered him signing terms that he gave every due consideration before turning them down.

Last night he admitted: "I appreciate the two bosses trying to persuade me to stay, but ultimately the direction Irvine Meadow is taking does not sit well with my very demanding work commitments.

“I am often running late in getting back to my Govan home. However, it was not a major problem and was easily overcome when we trained in Glasgow over the past few years.

"However, it is a problem now when you consider Medda are committed to a policy change that will see the players training down in Ayrshire and I can envisage me missing out on a lot of sessions.

“I didn’t fancy the situation and an entire new team coming together as well only helped make my mind up to make a clean break and walk away.”

The former Ashfield playing legend showed the utmost discretion in refusing to name the teams showing an interest in his striking services.

He added: "It wouldn’t be fair to name clubs, but fair to say I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the level of interest but right now my mind is set on taking time away from the Junior to weigh up my options.

“I do believe it’s no bad thing considering there was a lot of pressure on me to play games last season when not fully fit and it took a toll on my knee which underwent surgery so I’ve taken the conscious decision to rest and strengthen the joint .

“One of my close friends is involved in running an amateur side so I have been helping him out with a bit of coaching while working on my fitness at the same time and if truth be told it feels as if I’m in a good place right now.”

Meanwhile , Maxi’s erstwhile Meadow Park team mate and ex-Queens Park midfielder Michael Keenan is also without a new club ahead of a number of teams taking part in pre-season friendly matches tomorrow.

The Waterside based ace was reputedly on the signing radar of Kilbirnie Ladeside as well as one of his former clubs Arthurlie but it’s believed neither club followed up their initial approach with a firm contract offer which has left the 31 year old in a footballing limbo.

Yet another ex-Meadow Park signing David Sinclair, who has extensive Senior experience with Stirling Albion and Clyde among others before his reinstatement to the Junior ranks , has been snapped up by Rob Roy while the Irvine club have been successful with a bid for transfer listed Ardrossan Winton Rovers midfielder Ben Carson and he is likely to be unveiled in front of home fans when Medda host the visit of St Anthonys tomorrow afternoon.
