Jordan Spieth has set his sights on Ryder Cup revenge after closing his Open Championship campaign at Royal Troon.

The 22-year-old finished with a three-under 68 in Ayrshire yesterday for a two-over 286 at the end of a week in which he never got himself in the title mix.

Spieth, who won the Masters and US Open in 2015 as he chased the Grand Slam, still has plenty to play for in 2016 despite struggling to hit the heights of last year.

The Texas superstar has still won twice in the current campaign and has one more shot at Major glory in next week’s US PGA Championship.

Spieth also has the Ryder Cup on his mind and after suffering a singles defeat as the USA went down heavily to Europe at Gleneagles in 2014, the world No 3 is eager to make amends at Hazeltine in September.

Spieth said: “We've got to win one Ryder Cup. We've got to start a trend back the other way and make them (Europe) develop a task force. There is a big focus on the end of this year with certainly a a lot to play for. For me personally I've got to avenge. I felt that 2014 singles match loss at the Ryder Cup was a really important match that I lost for the team, and I'm going to go back and try to avenge that the best I can.

“Next week at the PGA could become one of the most special weeks I've ever had so that's what I’m focused on. There is a lot of golf left.”

Rory McIlroy made an outward half surge with four birdies in nine holes but his charge was halted after the turn but the 2014 Open champ still carded a four-under 67 for a four-under 280.

The Northern Irishman had endured a frustrating week in Ayrshire but he will head to the PGA Championship looking to add to his haul of four Major crowns.

He said: “Look, I want to win. I want to play well. I think you guys (the media) are more desperate for it to happen than I am. But I'm happy with everything. I'm happy with where my game's at. All I can do is keep plugging away. I feel like it's definitely heading in the right direction. If I can sharpen up a few things for the PGA, I’ll be right up there.”
